“Is it so hard to believe me?” she asked softly, running her fingers across the surface of the pale plush carpet underneath her. She had long since given up trying to hold back her tears, now allowing them to fall freely down her cheeks in thin rivulets. Her back was pressed firmly against the side of the couch with her legs tucked tightly to her chest, her chin rested forlornly on her knees as her tresses fell forward helping to conceal her face from view. The conversation had started off badly and somehow managed to worsen even though they had barely spoken a handful of words to each other. It was his words that stung the most as his tone carried no emotion towards her current state.
Silence spanned between them as he kept his back against an opposing wall, arms crossed and eyes closed - anything to avoid having to see her like this. It was now dusk and the room had grown darker, the only illumination coming from the moon shining down from above. Shadows would dance across the room as lights from outside flashed by through the large windows. She should have been able to hear the sound of the clock ticking on the nearby table, or the soft hum of traffic below them, but all she was greeted with was stillness.
“Yes,” he finally answered her, his voice sounding raspy rather than rich and baritone as she remembered it.
“I need to be with you,” she whispered.
He opened his mouth to respond but the words would not make themselves heard. Rather than try, he instead opted to step away from his resting place along the wall and out the front door.
Her tears continued to fall as she heard the resounding click of finality as the door pulled closed behind him. Several seconds passed, followed by minutes and what felt like hours. She knew that he would not be returning for her.
“Kai,” she whimpered, her hands now covering her damp face.
