The niche narrows
Hones one thin
Until his bones
Disclose him.

No one expected John to fall so hard, so fast.

It was understandable: she was perfect. Her long, black hair curled around John’s forearm as they kissed, his hand wound in up in her hair. They seemed to be always kissing, or whispering close together.

Rodney suspected an alien virus, an ancient device, an off-world witches’ spell.

They would not be parted, not for anything, and were joined forever in a beautiful native ceremony on her planet. Stepping through the Gate, they arrived in Atlantis side by side where Elizabeth, who hadn’t attended the ceremony, greeted them formally.

Carson’s tests were inconclusive. However, she was more than willing to open up. Her people had no compunction about these things.

Her heart was grown in a lab. It still beat just as hard when John was around.

Her jawline, reconstructed after the war, looked fine paired with the donor’s lips and the nose that she called her “vanity project.” Her hips were synthetic, her knees prosthetic, and her eyes were grown like bright blue flowers in a hothouse.

Sheppard never left her side. Even when she told Carson her age.

She was six-hundred and fifty-four.

Rodney knew John’s heart had never been broken before when he saw his face later that day. That was a first time face.

She went back to her people; the ceremony rendered null and void by mutual agreement. John may not have expected to grow old, but he expected even less to live forever.

Everyone avoided John for the first few days. It was weird. Only Rodney stayed at his side.

“Scientific knowledge has as many curses as it has blessings,” he told John, because now, John knew it too.
