all things come to an end. (good or not.)

The L Word premiered a few short weeks after Oz left me that last year I was in Florida. I watched the premiere with Sammy (and possibly other people, but I can't remember?), and I remember kind of being the only one who was impressed by it, in any way, engaged in it.

Over the years, it became a ridiculous roller-coaster ride of emotions, with some of the most uneven writing of any show I've ever EVER watched. But it's always been relevant, and it's always been engaging, to me, no matter how ridiculous it's gotten.

I understand all the criticism of the show. I understand especially that this last season has been pretty much a parody of itself, I do. I know that it's self-indulgent and it's absurd and it's ridden with continuity errors and it's just flat-out ridiculous most of the time.

But it was the first tv show I'd seen that normalized lesbians, and it's the first show I'd seen that actually addressed day-to-day social and political issues that can arise within a queer community. (Queer as Folk did a good job with the monumental political issues, but it used a much broader brush, and at its worst tended towards misogyny.)

Tonight was its series finale, and taken alone, it was pretty freakin' awful. It provided no sense of closure, and it continued this season's trend of alienating the audience by continuing to present its previously rich, deep characters as caricatures of themselves.

But it's still the end of an era, one that I am sad to see end. Rest in peace, pretty show. I will miss you, warts and all.

mwahs!
