i don't know how many people are aware of this, but the writer's guild of america officially went
on strike yesterday. this is terrible, heartbreaking news to those of us who love television, and, depending on the length of the strike, could be just as bad for those of us who love film. they've
called a meeting in about a half hour from now to announce the official recommendation from their leadership, so it's not final final, but it's looking pretty good (read: bad) right about now.
strike rules basically prohibit anyone that's a member of the writer's guild -- which is basically anyone who writes television anywhere in the country -- from doing anything other than striking. which basically means that the filming of television shows of all kinds, around the country, canadia, you name it, will stop for the duration of the strike. this is immediately terrible news for anyone who likes late night shows, saturday night live, the daily show and the colbert report. it's terrible news slightly delayed (i think) for those who like reality shows currently on the air, as i'm not sure whether or not reality shows are exempt (and i'm pretty sure that reality show writers -- and yes, they DO have writers -- are members of the WGA). and it's terrible news slightly more delayed for those of us who thrive on scripted television. because production will HALT, pretty much cease to exist, for the duration of the strike.
i'm trying not to get too worried. i am. but it's hard not to when their demands aren't too terribly unreasonable. these aren't the actors threatening to strike here. these people don't (usually) make millions of dollars a year. most of these people are people who are just looking to keep doing what they love to do. so i'm sad for them, and i'm sad for me, whose february sweeps could end up being....a bunch of reruns.
so cross your fingers, folks. it could be a long, dry winter.
in totally unrelated news, i should never have gotten out of bed this morning. i would go into detail, but they occasionally like me to do this crazy work thing, when i'm here, at work. so there's that.
mwahs.
