The Fifty Books Challenge, year three! (Years one, two, and three just in case you're curious.) This was a secondhand find.

Title: My Cat's Not Fat, He's Just Big-Boned by Nicole Hollander

Details: Copyright 1998, Hysteria Books

Synopsis (By Way of Back Cover): "Cats who think too much, cats who hypnotize their owners, cats who plot dastardly deeds but get distracted, cats who think they're kids, and of course cats obsessed with food, food, food."

Why I Wanted to Read It: I remember reading Nicole Hollander's books as a kid, largely because they centered on cats. This was passed along to me by a family member that recalled my reading them.

How I Liked It: Marketed as separate from (but related to) the long-running daily comic also created by the author, Sylvia, this book is about the humor you'd expect from comics about (usually) single (professional, actively dating) women and their cats. It's cute and several of the strips do recall a cat-owner's experiences. It has a distinctly '90s sensibility to it, almost like a far more indie Cathy with cats and non sequitors. The art is also quirkily '90s, the distinct scribble style and mostly flat facial expressions define it easily.

The word "cute" keeps coming to mind, although save for a few cartoons that particularly speak to cat-lover experiences, it isn't really. The book's not pad as a sort of period piece, but since that's not the focus, it's more like a side effect.

Notable: Hollander's Sylvia is the framing device for the majority of the cartoons.
Since I've only read a few of the Sylvia strips, I can't tell you if this book differs significantly from the daily comic.
