Falling out of the politics of the '70s, the creators (well, Alan Moore, judging by his commentary) imagined a world where it would take nuclear war (rather than any one major political party) to drive England to fascist police state.

This is really interesting. In the movie (the last time I saw it was years ago, so I could be wrong), England's progression to fascism looks more like a repeat of '30's Germany--with more Christian fundamentalism. I'd thought that Moore had been speculating about what would come of England if it continued to have leaders like Margaret Thatcher.

The movie doesn't even mention a nuclear war, or anything about other countries except the United States. Its only mention is made by an O'Reilly-like commentator, describing it as 'the world's biggest leper colony'--said commentator is of course on the only channel available. This being so, it's also kind of interesting that everyone is evidently assured a really nice TV.

I probably wasn't explaining clearly: the fascism depicted in the book version is very World War II as well, complete with the interment camps ( ... )
