Notes: My first attempt at DBSK fic. I don't actually know how this came about, because I was trying to write SJ fic and that failed and somehow became this. Also, lots of ♥ to 57mannequins!

The saddest truth about life is that there's no such thing as happily ever afters.

Junsu knows this logically from the start, but it's not like any of it matters because this is Jaejoong, and Jaejoong is anything but logical. He's like the rain Junsu used to try and catch between cupped hands, all fleeting wishes and fragmented daydreams. He laughs like the waves of the ocean and kisses like the world is ending, greets everyone with unrestrained warmth and freely-given touches that Junsu wishes he could capture and keep for himself (except he can't, because water droplets always manage to slip through cracks he can't even see and escape, and Jaejoong was never meant to be caught in the first place.)

Junsu is the son of a well-known politician. He's been to North America dozens of times, attended cocktail parties in Paris and visited dignitaries' houses in London. He grew up memorizing the names of French wines and taking etiquette lessons, learning how to greet the daughters of foreign ministers and conduct himself in a meeting. He has the world handed to him on a platter, but he's poorer than Jaejoong in terms of all the things he'd yet to try and all the ordinary people he'd never met.

Jaejoong has never left Korea. He has a part time job at a bakery to help pay for his tuition and writes in his free time (he has a notebook with light blue pages he carries around everywhere, the one Junsu got him for his birthday). He leaves fragments of sentences on the coffee table and happy endings stuck under magnets on the door of the fridge, and Junsu thinks it might be love.

The rain comes, but it always leaves. And the same drop of water never lands in the same place twice.

Jaejoong smiles with laughing eyes and fairydust in his hair (I'm going to break your heart) and kisses him senseless, and Junsu finds that he can't breathe (but if this is dying, it's worth it).

They kiss until the stars disappear and the barest hint of dawn hovers at the edge of the horizon, until Junsu's heart is scattered in pieces around the room with their clothing and Jaejoong is leaving (again), and even as he walks out the door, he's still smiling. Junsu lets him go because he'd known from the beginning, because this is what Jaejoong is all about. He thinks that the other was never made for his type of existance anyway - because Jaejoong's constant unpredictability is what makes him Jaejoong in the first place.

A week later, Junsu finds a piece of paper in the cupboard drawers, third one from the right. The page is an azure blue, the edges jagged from where it had been ripped out.

(once upon a time, there were two boys. one was the son of a politician, the other, a wanderer. they ran away to paris and fell in love, and lived happily ever after.)
