Ariel’s thoughts: 真情流露 (My True Emotions Revealed)
When Matthew, Wilson and I were invited to perform at David’s wedding, we were honestly blown away by the couple’s request for a 4-set gig. Full of expectations that this was gonna be a night to remember, I brought all my lyrics just in case the party could not be contained! And as it turned out, the celebrations went beyond all our expectations.
First off, David and Theodore dispensed with all formalities and chose to mingle with their guests right at the start of the dinner. The newly weds invited around 60 guests, which made their wedding celebrations a cosy and personal occasion. Furthermore, judging from the warm compliments we received from the guests, we could tell from the couple had taken pains to select songs that their loved ones would connect with.
These include English favourites like Close To You, Just The Way You Are and I’m Yours as well as Mandopop and Cantopop must-haves such as 今天你要嫁给我 (Marry Me Today), 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart), 默契 (Chemistry), 你的名字我的性氏 (Your Name With My Surname) and 每天爱你多一些 (Every Day I Love You More). I’m sure their guests enjoyed Wilson’s smooth vocals, who also played guitar that night. Matthew also received plenty of compliments for his skillful hands on the piano.
As the crowd warmed up, David decided to present a surprise item for Theodora, which he had instructed the band to help prepare prior to the wedding. With Theodora seated comfortably on a chair, David sang 真情流露 (My True Emotions Revealed), accompanied by Matthew on the piano and Wilson on the guitar, and poured his heart out for Theodora. Of course, the floodgates of tears broke out as David’s passion and emotions, underscored by the lyrics of the song, touched the depths of Theodora’s heart. The band were really glad that we had played a small part in David’s declaration of love to Theodore!
The fun wasn’t over yet. While the guests stayed at their tables during our first and second sets, they were on their feet, i.e. mingling, dancing, and singing along, by the time we entered into the third set! This was when we received a number of song dedications to the couple and with the wonderful iPhone around, the band could all find the lyrics we needed! I took up a request for Love Will Keep Us Alive while Wilson sang two other dedications, Michael Buble’s Home and Don McLean’s Vincent, for which he had successfully obtained the lyrics using his iPhone.
By the 4th set, we had plenty of guests who wanted to dedicate songs to the couple and so why not invite them to sing? As there were so many dedications, my lyrics folder began circulating around the room. When the lyrics were unavailable in my folder, some guests began showing us their iPhone screens with the song lyrics in hope that we could play the songs for them to perform. The band accommodated as much as humanly possible - with Wilson and Matthew accompanying on the instruments and I as the backup vocalist. The band was blessed by their presence and performances and I daresay they could all hold a tune of their own.
It was already 1230am when the band wrapped up but we knew by then that this was one wedding we would never forget, whether it was the fun-loving couple and their boisterous friends or the songs we sang along together. I felt really blessed to share the stage with Wilson, who is an immensely talented singer and guitarist, as well as Matthew - maestro, pianist and life of the band. That night, everyone including the couple and their mates as well as the band, lived in the moment!
