Bevlyn's thoughts: 爱在夜上海 (Love In Shanghai)

I was looking forward to this wedding because the theme was 'Shanghai Night', and the generous groom Eddy, actually offered to sponsor my cheongsam for the night! It was taken off the rack from his boutique "Simply Dresses", located at Marina Square.

All the efforts put into this wedding was definitely not wasted. First of all, it was a sight to behold with many ladies donned in colourful and elegant cheongsams. To kick-start the event, we played a lively 1st march-in instrumental You Are The Sunshine Of My Life to welcome the bride and groom.

We were pleasantly surprised when the guests gave us thunderous applause at the end of the first song 小手拉大手 (Small Hand Holds Big Hand) for the 1st dish. Though it was 'Shanghai night', Eddy requested that the band perform some English classics and contemporary pop to cater to the different tastes that his guests might have.

And if I thought the great chemistry between Joel and Boon Chye (who played together for the first time) was what made my night, I was wrong because there were quite many other events that made the night unique.

Eddy's father has a passion for music, and when invited to perform for his guests, he promptly went up to the stage to strum-and-sing 6 songs with his guitar! Needless to say, the guests were full of cheer and support for this lovable elder.

Following that special programme was a Best Dressed contest, which I had to call out for volunteers to participate. As we had 3 categories - Best Dressed Male, Best Dressed Female, and Best Dressed couple, we ended up with the stage full of stunningly dressed people! Winners were decided by the loudest cheers and applause given by the guests themselves. It was amazing how fun the atmosphere could be at a wedding!

Special mention goes to Shawl Singapore (located at Tangs Orchard) which sponsored an astonishingly elegant black shawl to the Best Dressed Female winner. The Best Dressed Male award went to a man who wore a 李小龙 (Bruce Lee) look-alike Kungfu costume.

And as there were too many well-dressed couples, we eventually decided to have two winners! Contestants who did not win the awards did not despair because they each walked away with the consolation prize of a beautiful shawl.

After this highly entertaining event, the party continued to rock. Immediately after the Best Dressed contest was a lucky draw which gave out probably 30 prizes, from consolation to starter, to the top 3 prizes (which comprises items like Philip DVD player, Johnny Walker Red Label, portable CD-player, etc)

Now who says wedding dinners are boring?!

Repertoire:

You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, 小手拉大手 (Small Hand Holds Big Hand), 我要你的爱 (I Want Your Love), Close To You, 但愿人长久 (May All Live Long And Well), You Are So Beautiful, 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart), Fly Me To The Moon, 夜上海 (Shanghai Nights), 爱你在心口难开 (Love You More Than I Can Say), Love Me Tender, 我只在乎你 (I Only Care For You), 夜来香 (Fragrance In The Night)

Song to recommend:

我要你的爱 (I Want Your Love) is probably the song I enjoy singing the most throughout all the gigs I've done. The swing definitely got under my skin, and contrary to many, I think it's not an outright seductive song. It's a tumblemix of seducing and being reserved; of desiring and being cold; and of anger. I was learning from the original version of singer 葛兰, who did a fantastic job of not biting her own tongue while singing the english rap parts (Yeah they had rap in those days!)

Wedding Tips:

(1) Have a theme wedding closely connected to your personalities or passions
(2) Once you have decided on the theme, think of creative activities that center around it
(3) If your parents are musically-inclined, get them to sing for you!

Compliments from Eddy:

"The Band was certainly very obliging to my every request. The band played all the Mandarin shanghai jazz favourites with ease, as well as the English evergreen songs and the contempory songs that I requested. When I requested for Bevln to be dressed in a cheongsum for my Shanghai Chic dress theme, she gamely agreed without even looking at the cheongsums first. She even took the time and effort to travel to my store at Marina Square for the fitting.

Bevlyn also doubled as the night's emcee. I didn't give Bevlyn any scripts nor programme schedule. Just very impromptu. Bevlyn had to come up with last minute lines and cope with last minute changes throughout the evening. Fortunately she is experienced enough handle any situation."
