Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Thank You For Loving Me

Having performed at so many weddings, I'm used to seeing couples who are too busy attending to their friends and relatives to stay at one spot for more than two minutes. Perfectly understandable, because there are about 300 other guests to greet and catch up, all within that half-hour cocktail reception.

Ivan and Shin Yi

Ivan and Shin Yi were a welcome exception. They established eye contact, and took pains to make sure that we were well taken care of even before we started performing. It took just a few minutes of chatting for us to behave like old friends. I even coaxed him to take a leap of faith with me, and do something really out of the ordinary. More on that later.

Even though Ivan and Shin Yi chose songs from different genres, I thought that there should have been some Mandarin songs for the older folk. Hence, halfway through our set, I went up to the couples' parents and asked if they'd like to listen to some Mandarin songs. They nodded enthusiastically, so we sang the classic Teresa Teng number, 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart).

One Mandarin song led to another, because Ivan's sister wanted to dedicate the touching ballad, 你最珍贵 (You're The Most Precious One) to the couple. Luckily I brought the lyrics, so we were able to perform it. Both Mandarin songs were very well-received; one guest even gave us a standing ovation!

So what did I persuade Ivan to do?

It turned out that he never went down on one knee when he proposed to Shin Yi ( Lynette would disapprove). So I urged him to declare his love to her in front of all the guests. Initially Ivan was against the idea, citing nerves as a factor. "But Shin Yi will be touched beyond words!" I said. That was the clincher. Ivan agreed without hesitation.

And when he knelt on one knee and asked Shin Yi if she was willing to spend the rest of her life with him, the crowd went wild! Shin Yi was taken completely by surprise, and could not stop smiling. I couldn't stop either, so caught up was I by their happiness.
