Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Have I Told You Lately?

One of the advantages of having a live band is that we can use music to create the right accents at specific points of the evening.

Some might argue that the CD player is just as good, since the experienced sound tech knows when to adjust the volume to create swells of music when required.

But what the CD player couldn't do, was this: Jackie, the groom, was reading out a meticulously prepared thank-you speech to his guests while Jamie, the beautiful bride, was standing beside him.

The moment he said, "And how can I not thank Jamie, my wife? Loving you has never been difficult, because you have always supported and loved me..."

Matthew, who had been leaning forward to catch the words, began playing the opening bars of Rod Stewart's classic Have I Told You Lately?

And even though Jackie said a few more unscripted lines (no doubt inspired by the occasion), Matthew had no problems alternating the chords while waiting for this part of Jackie's speech, "And now I would like to sing a song for you, because it's your favourite. This is what I want to say..."

Jackie started singing...

Have I told you lately that I loved you?
Have I told you, there's no one else above you?
You fill my heart with gladness,
Take away all my sadness,
Ease my troubles, that's what you do...

It was the perfect ending to his speech.

Bevlyn's thoughts: What A Difference A Song Made

What a difference a song made. Not just any song played out of a CD, but one that Jackie sang himself.

While Jackie's bravery for not rehearsing with the band at all is to be applauded, someone else among the invited guests should also be credited for making the evening more interesting.

An unabashed young man came up to Hsin Yeow while I was singing and requested Close To You. We usually do not take on impromptu requests, but we simply could not resist his charms.

So when Hsin Yeow sang it as the next song, he quickly came up to us again, took over the microphone for the very last verse and ended the song with the perfect, improvised high note. Before we could do any crowd control, his friends encircled him!

Bevlyn and Jason

Great singing Jason! We recognise a talent immediately when we hear one!
