Jonathan Ang's thoughts: The Way You Look Tonight
Wei Ping and Kenny's wedding was a straightforward yet elegant affair which the band members and myself enjoyed playing at. The couple decided to go for something on a smaller scale, a ballroom with only 15 tables or so. Personally, I very much enjoy playing at such settings as the atmosphere is always more cozy and intimate.
Thankfully, the couple managed to book Edmund in time for him to take these beautiful photos!
The band kicked off to a good start; the two vocalists Juliet and Zheng Quan were working together for the first time, but there was definitely no indication of such. In fact, their pitch-perfect harmony in the classic Dream A Little Dream provided much fresh perspective to this popular number. With Feri on guitar and myself on keyboard, it was a solid combination of both musical and vocal prowess.
And deliver we did, to our very best! The guests warmed up to us soon enough, and before long there were breaking out in appreciative applause after every number that ended with either Juliet or Zheng Quan’s beautiful crooning. In turn, we were pleasantly surprised when we found out that the wedding coordinator actually kindly arranged for us to also dine in the banquet lunch, with our portions set aside on a separate table so we could enjoy (or rather, devour) them at our own time during set breaks.
Towards the end of the wedding, Wei Ping and Kenny were cajoled into giving each other their first dance as a married couple! At first, we chose an upbeat number, Save The Last Dance For Me. However, it was obvious that Wei Ping and Kenny were also yearning for a slow-paced number so they could linger in each other’s arms longer.
As such, we gladly obliged and promptly continued with a slower song, The Way You Look Tonight, much to the couple and guests’ delight.
During one of our breaks, I actually mentioned to Juliet as to how I appreciated liked this wedding as it was simple, yet very classy. There were no speeches, no march-ins, no cake-cutting, no champagne pouring, no yum seng ceremony. Even Kenny kept his thank-you speech to a short and sweet two minutes! I did, however, observe that Wei Ping and Kenny were actively milling around with their guests throughout the lunch banquet, chatting away animatedly at family and friends.
This is something that wedding couples usually don’t have the opportunity to engage in if their wedding banquet schedule as packed to the brim. This I find it to be a pity as it is a celebration with friends and family, after all.
After the wedding, I chatted with Wei Ping for a short while and she mentioned, "Thank goodness the band was here, otherwise we would have had the world's most boring wedding!"
To that, I quickly disagreed and told her that I absolutely loved the warmness, elegance and simplicity of their wedding. Yes, we probably livened up her wedding with music, but at the end of the day it was Wei Ping and Kenny's heartfelt appreciativeness towards their friends and family that made a difference!
Juliet's thoughts: 我要你的爱 (I Want Your Love)
More first-times with different musicians and with one of my favourite pianists, Jonathan Ang. It was like a reunion we look forward to now and then, now spiced up with new vibes for me, with Feri, a wonderful guitarist with such beautiful steady and clean lines and Zhengquan, I've yet to hear any male singers hitting high notes like that! On top of that, it was my first lunch wedding, and i must say, such an attentive audience the crowd was!
I started the set with L-O-V-E, ZQ did a quiet and moving Love Will Keep Us Alive. and the first duet of the set was an interesting version of Dream A Little Dream (duet with Zhengquan). The crowd seemed very appreciative of Mandarin numbers when we did 甜蜜蜜 (Honey Sweet)，月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart)， 爱是永恒 (Love Is Eternal) and requested for more.
We apologised for not having these songs from the pre-selected(by the couple) and hadn't the lyrics to perform impromptu, but were very encouraged by their enthusiasm to hear more familiar numbers. Halfway through ZQ's 朋友 (Friends)（which was something we decided to connect with the happy crowd), the couple's friend or relative came up to me and said they must dance!
He heartily said he'd have no problems getting them to get up on their feet! The band discussed and we started off with Sway, a hot little salsa number but the couple was blushing from the heat, so we cooled it to a soothing The Way You Look Tonight which seemed to do the trick. And again, the very excited family member or friend, came up to me while I was singing the number, to keep the music going for another 6 songs or so.
I must say it was really a rare beautiful sight to see the couple embrace and slow-danced, and i think even more unique, since it was a lunch wedding.
Other highlights of the lunch, was 我要你的爱 (I Want Your Love) and Can't Take My Eyes Off You. The crowd wolf-whistled at us! How cute is that?! :) They liked our raunchy rendition of it, I personally, enjoyed, ZQ's chipmunk backup as he sang in response to my verse lines. The musicians did a great job bringing out the flava, and i'd say that's my favourite of the performance. Everyone had fun, which is almost always the missing element in over-serious weddings.
We're glad to have been part of it. :)

We just wanted to drop a line to give our warmest thanks for the fabulous performance at our wedding lunch. The whole affair was a last-minute decision and put together in just one month.
Since both of us are quite shy, we were a bit stressed about how we were going to keep the guests entertained. We actually only contacted the band 1 week before the event! However, you couldn't tell from the polished performances.
I had several guests comment on Juliet's beautiful vocals, and it was nice to see our usually-reserved families enjoy the music and start to applaud, especially after the Chinese numbers.
Thanks again for making our special day even more special.
