SUPANOVA 08 THE CON REPORT!

Jun 23, 2008 14:08

I had so much fun this convention, especially making our Disney Aladdin and genie cosplay in ONE WEEK (actually three days). Possibly THE most loltastic cosplay we've ever done.

Supanova Saturday in a series of crackish pictures, and waffling commentary:

Especially when I realised my sewing skills had deteroriated to noob status because of all the foam and cardboard stuff I've been doing, so I whined to arlo_arleh constantly while making my noob shirt. My harem pants took me five hours to figure out the pattern. It took her around an hour (though she did have the benefit of seeing how I did it first). She's obviously the better seamstress. I also ended up doing my vest inside out then turning it the right side out, as if I was going to stuff it, because that seemed like the easiest option. Never make vests this way. Only noobs like me do it this way.

Best sewing moment when at around 2AM I pointed out, quite seriously, "My pants. They are PERFECT" and pointed to the inside elastic where I had made proper drawstring holes and everything. Then Arleh's eyes slid to where I had accidentally sewn one side open at the leg. And where I cut the pattern wrong. And that one bit in the leg where I miss-pinned and there's a fold over of fabric in the leg and I had just sewn over it. She pretty much started rolling on the ground laughing.

Then there was the day after where we had a make up test for my face, and I asked Arleh to draw on my eyebrows, because usually she is the Grand Master Of Dubiously Drawn On Facial Hair. Except she drew them on lop sided with each end swirling to different directions.

The resulting HOUR LONG LOL nearly killed us.

CLEARLY I had to fix that while Arleh rolled around on the ground wheezing some more. It looks better after I filled it in with some eyeshadow at the very least. And nuded coloured my girl-pink sausage lips into something more masculine.

I find it funny make up is necessary to look more masculine.

And Arleh's costume was JUST as hilarious, since we decided to use a muscle shirt she had in stock (she once cosplayed Captain Planet). But it was bulky in strange shapes. Like genie on steroids.

So we spent Saturday morning stuffing it so we could have fat Genie, with the body of a beefcake and me, drawing on fresh loltastic eyebrows. The mask was made out of left over foam from Eva (such as that pile in the corner), as well as the fez which is foam with a bit of velvet made like a pillowcase to cusp the little fez.

I made a shirt for Aladdin because I knew it would be freaking cold, I was too much of a wuss to be that cold all day, as well as exposing my scrawny half naked self. I'm always so impressed by girls like Catty and Tsubaki who CAN tape down their boobs and actually BE exposing skin. That's bravery yo. Respect.

To continue our streak of lol-ness we went through Maccas drive through in costume before we went there. While blaring Disney music.

That's right. We're Hard. Core.

ONTO THE ACTUAL CON!

We made it to Supanova ON TIME for once! Possibly because Anna, my lovely Jasmine might kick our collective arses if we were late.

It was freaking cold outside as predicted, but I was warmed by the constant exercise of laughing myself silly everytime I looked at Arleh in her swimming cap and muscle suit.

The cosplayers this year really stepped up! And since cosplay's why I go to these things, I can honestly say this year was worthwhile.

This superman cosplayer was really muscular. His neck! Or lack thereof. Wow.

Boba and Jango. I really like my pic of Jango. Composition fwoo.

Arleh being HILARIOUS.
Arleh: *in Arnie voice* "The ever impressive."

Acey as Hojo.

Every Disney prince's wet dream.

Our awesome group. Though we kept losing and gaining people throughout the day. I still can't say how many we ended up being. And we were the only men. Manly men. All those other Princes are obviously too good to join the street rat and his blue friend. More ladies for me.

I can honestly say I STILL have no idea what John was cosplaying as this year. Except that it looked liked a giant curly bee. His eyebrows zomg.

LION FACE. RAWR. LEMON FACE OOH. We tried to entice this guy to join our Disney group. Alas, he would not be wooed. Not even with the promise of Genie sex. And now that the FurryMagic image is in your head, you cannot UNSEE IT.

You know who was ULTRA SEXY?

Catty and Tsubaki as Naruto and Sasuke! They are AWESOMELY brave for having skin on show like that. Me and Arleh could never do it. Possibly because we're too scrawny and spotty, unlike the creamy smooth perfection that is Catty and Tsubaki's chest(s). ♥

Aladdin and Genie = BFF 4 Lyfe.

Our awesome threesome.

You all wanted to do it. I know.

My favourite shot of Mulan with nifty sword glare. This girl was so in character it was scary. She could kick hunny buns at ANY MOMENT.

The first of the HILARIOUS MID AIR shots!

PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER.

I should totally photoshop a carpet under me.

Love is in the aiiiir~

As gorgeous as Cloud is, my eye was caught by the Bleach mask. This would be an awesomely hot crossover to write.

This dude did a fantastic Joker. I got chills.

glorfindel and Catty being adorable.

It was INSANE how cute of a girl he made. I did a double take when I realised that WAS a boy. He even shaved his legs!

I was however MOST impressed with X7's Tekken group. Mostly because I'm such a die hard Tekken fan, it being the SINGLE AND ONLY GAME I CAN PLAY. So whenever there's Tekken cosplayers I have a spaz of joy and end up stalking them for the day.

... it helped that the guy who played Jin was so terribly, terribly hot.

Look at those abs! *swoon* He was also practicing his moves in a corner too, and had all the Jin karate moves down pat in such graceful arcs and strength. You could see every tendon *flex* Ngh. Is my fangirl crush too obvious? My photobucket is full of stalker pictures, sorry.

Hwoarang also brought the hot to the table.

Being who I am, I asked them to hug, and Hwoarang was all YEAH, I'LL DO IT while Jin looked adorably embarrassed for himself and me. Sadly I was too slow with my camera to catch the obliging hug, but I got them MID TACKLE TO THE GROUND. It looks so dubious where Jin's mouth is. Lol. Did I say mouth? I mean head. Ehehe.

I was V.v.v.v.very happy. It made MY day.

Hee.

Meanwhile here's an AWESOME midair shot of Naruto and Sasuke duking it out.

Epic lol.

I was so glad I managed to catch this picture. How often do you get to see gold Boba head rest on Daniel Jackson? The cute. It burns.

No one STEALs from the empire and lives!!!

The vendors! Hi to everyone who I talked to, including the happy dudes at PININ, the guys from Transreality whom we managed to buy a rose off on Sunday because we STUPIDLY forgot the key prop to our skit and Tamarket.

Especially Tamarket, whom I bugged ALL DAY for a Sanji plushie. And they promised me one, because they said they did bring one. So I checked in every few hours to see if they had found it yet. At one point they FOUND IT and then, lost it again by misplacing it somewhere. I watched for a few moments of amusement as they threw boxes around in frustration. When I finally returned for the fourth time around 4:30pm (my quest started from 10 in the morning) they presented the infamous plushie to me, and LO AND BEHOLD. IT WAS ZORO.

I nearly died laughing at their expressions when I told them. I bought the plushie anyway, because of all their hard work keeping and finding it for me, even though it wasn't my dreamed of Sanji (though I did rub in their INREDIBLE FAIL). Sorry to all the other customers I held up by making these two gentlemen rummage around in their boxes for my single plushie.

The Dollfie stall always scares me, because as much as those dolls are beautiful they're also really creepy.

AHHHHH. IT IS A BUNNY IN A DRESS. With bows.

There were also some complaints that the venue was smaller this year compared to last year's but I found that I really enjoyed the smaller space. It was cosier and that meant less walking, instead of the nightmare of a walk for last year, where the cosplay was shunted off in a corner, as was the seminar rooms. This space is much better to navigate, and it was plenty big enough. It felt like there were more vendors in any case, and the free coke zero was very nice. Every time I passed I drank like it was the fountain of youth.

The cosplay stage COULD be bigger though, as well as the spacing for the celebrities and their fans (not that I ended up parting with my money to see/photo/sign with them).

The food was hideously expensive as always. Arleh complained bitterly about her unsalted $4 bucket of chips. While I gaped silently at the audacity of someone charging $4.50 for a single sushi roll. BUT to counter this, at least there were plenty of toilets throughout the day. I didn't have to wait in line ONCE the ENTIRE DAY for the bathroom which is unheard of in the ladies-bathroom-line-up tradition that happens everywhere there is even the tiniest of crowds. The air conditioning was also warm enough to not freeze from the freakish cold weather, but cool enough to not be sweating like a pig (though Arleh would disagree about the sweating). It was also well lit for once, and easier to take photos that didn't have to compensate for tungsten mildew yellow lighting. It's the little things, that make a convention smoother and more pleasant, and I for one, notice and appreciate it.

I did attend Jewel Staite's seminar since I loved her in Firefly, and found her likeable enough on Stargate Atlantis. It's weird for me, that she's such a nice, lovely person, and yet... so boring. I know she isn't given well written material on Stargate, which is why I find her SGA character so incredibly uninteresting, but her dullish answers in the Q & A, and her beige style of dress kind of made me disappointed she doesn't possess the Kaylee quirkness which made me like her in the first place. Someone asked the golden question of why Keller was such a HOR for going first with Ronon and then with Rodney, and she brushed by it like a pro with no definite answers. Hers is not a talent for anecdote (unlike Sean The Voice of Goku who will always be my favourite speaker for conventions). The most interesting answers she gave was in response to her husband's dastardly skills in wiping off the Lost finale off her Tivo.

I managed to get a great seat for her talk, right in front of her husband. And by right in front, I mean, my back was pressed against his leg because I had to sit on the floor. So she looked RIGHT AT ME in my loltastic Aladdin costume, pawing at her husband's leg. At least she'll remember me? Haha.

Everyone can agree the biggest downer was the sound for cosplay being so shit this year. Such a pity. Maybe its time to cut back on the free shaving cream in the show bags and get a new set of stereos for sound ne? Kudos to everyone who did their skits anyway with such passion!

And finally, to end the day I had to say bye to March's Mini-Animania tag:

We had a great run together, three solid months. RIP blue tag, RIP. *sticks it in the gross folder I have of all my old wrist bands*

All in all, a great Saturday.
