There are two ways you can go about it. You can tell a person everything in the beginning in hopes of their acceptance, thus throwing everyone else away who doesn't give you the respect you deserve. Or, you can move slowly and divulge the needful information as it arises and through the absolute knowledge of your trust in them and their character. Neither of these guarantee no hurt or heartbreak.
Your past is not you, Alissa. No matter what you've done you always have a new day ahead of you to make sure you don't fall back into your old habits. The most important knowledge for you to have right now is why you do something, not how or when. Behind the why are the other, more valuable details that can bring about true change in yourself.
But you also really need to change for yourself, not for anyone else's distorted image of who you are and who you should be. No one knows how to live your life better than you. Just be sure that you feel good about the choices you'll make tomorrow for the rest of your life, and the path that you take yourself to.
