GOBAMA

I wanted to stay up as long as it took to see Florida called.  I wanted to believe I was in it for the long haul.  I caved around 1:30 am (8:30 pm EST).  It was exciting a million miles away, by myself, in a darkened room with the computer on my lap and earbuds in my ears, with only MSNBC's live internet broadcast to keep me company; I can't imagine how it would have been had Clark Kent and I been in the States.  We would have stayed together on the couch, drinking decaf tea, and snacking on something salty.  I slept soundly for 4 hours and got up at 5:30 am (12:30 am EST) and excitedly read Balie's text, "OBAMA!"  Linda was supposed to text me last night.  I don't know what happened, but I'm sure glad Balie did.  I got out of bed and went to the computer.  I felt tired - the kind of tired I felt on October 10th when we finally were able to go to sleep after arriving in the UK.  I sat in front of the computer, put my earbuds in place, and watched the videos on Obama's acceptance and McCain's concession with wide-eyes - hoping that Clark Kent would stir and wake up.  I couldn't help but cry - I cried trying to think of how Michelle felt when he was declared President Elect.  I cried thinking about how so much of our youth have positive African-Americans to look up to.  I cried feeling that I was a part of history - remembering how four years ago my Grandmother and I watched his speech at the Democratic National Convention and how I felt truly wowed by a speaker for the first time in my life.  May God bless and protect Obama and his family.

Around 6:50 am, I was getting pretty impatient.  I got back in bed, but very clumsily - hoping to wake Clark Kent.  He remained motionless.  I put my cold feet on him - still, motionless.  I tried gently nudging him, nothing.  Poking him, nothing.  Usually, he is not a sound sleeper at all!  Finally I kind of shook him - ever so slightly!  That seemed to do the trick.  It was fun sharing the news with him.  Over dinner he had said that he wanted Obama to win desperately, but feared McCain would win.  We finally got up around 7:30 and I asked if he could take the morning off - we could go into town, get some kind of delicious flavored latte, buy a paper, and walk with our heads held proudly high - after, we are Americans AND we voted for Obama!  As luck would have it, he had a fire warden meeting (yes, he's been selected (low man on the totem poll kind of thing) to be his floor's fire warden) at 10 am.  We had to settle on breakfast at the Earley Cafe.  It was nice spending an unexpected morning with him - feeling hopeful and victorious.   Before breakfast, we stopped in at one of the many little news/milk/bread shops on our street to buy a local paper.  The man who worked there said, "You know, Obama won.  Those papers won't tell you that since they were printed before he won.  I watched the news this morning and Obama won."  He smiled from ear to ear; we did too.  We chose two papers and, realizing we were Americans, he asked us where about we were from.  I proudly said, "Florida!  And, Florida voted Obama!"  After breakfast, we stopped into the Sue Ryder Charity Shop (a thrift store) where I scored a great Christmas stocking plate!

Oh, what a happy day:

I will make an Obama inspired Christmas ornament today....I'll also be taking a much need nap since I only got 4 hours last night.
