Seeing connections

I don't know if this is a function of being older, or of being better-read, or of specializing. But I find myself noticing a hell of a lot more little connections than I ever have before.

And what, you ask, do I mean by a "little connection"?

Well, I was playing Kingdom of Loathing just now, and fighting a drunken rat. The rat attacked, and the flavor text went like this: "It takes another swig of booze and performs an impressive drunken-master karate routine. Impressive in that he impresses his feet and claws repeatedly onto your arse."

When I read that, I immediately thought "OMG, an instance of the conceptual metaphor EMOTIONAL EFFECT IS PHYSICAL IMPACT." And then I thought "Wow, that is a really perceptive, well-wrought pun."

I suppose, then, that this noticing-more-little-connections thing I've got going on is actually a function of me being a horrible pedant and an incorrigible geek.

But it's awfully pleasant. Especially when you can predict what speakers are going to say, about a minute before they say it. Whee.
