I hate that whenever I have free time I just lose all motivation to do anything pointful at all. At the moment (spring break...), this includes everything from semi-academic work all the way down to social interaction and basic maintenance stuff like putting away my clean laundry. I've been doing that; in particular, I signed myself up for an orchestrated activity from 10-12 every morning, to get myself out of bed. It helps transiently. I even went to Chinatown today to get foods I've been missing. But it's not a panacea. I'm skipping Tech Squares for something like the fourth week in a row, for crying out loud.

The point of a break is decompression. So you need to have some random nothging-to-do days.

There is no such thing as "already behind" when you are a freshman. Everything you do is pointful. At HMC (the one we toured recently) they have a 2-year requirement load that makes everyone take 2 years of chemistry, 2 years of math, one year of bio and some 16 credits of humanities. This is for a "general engineering" curriculum (pretty much for everyone there regardless of major.) Their graduates are some of the most prized, apparently, by grad schools, because they are well cross-trained for today's interdisciplinary environment. Your wandering can be very healthy. Just get a perspective.

No, my point is that among other things I'll have to take two particular courses next semester and most of my cohort are taking them this semester. Ergo I'm behind.

(Orgo and an intro CS course, if you're curious.)
