Erika's Mid-year Pre-Kindergarten Progress Report

Erika handed it to me, sitting at the dining table holding Amelia in my lap, and returned to completing her homework assignment. "It's my progress report," she says matter-of-factly, "so you know how I'm doing in school."

"How do you think you're doing in school?" I say, with a teasing tone. She shrugs non-comittally, but I see her sneaking a sideways glance at me as I read.


Students were rated based on the following key: Outstanding, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement, or Not Applicable.

I. Her social and emotional development is outstanding. She plays well with others, takes turns, is aware of others feelings, respects property of others, obeys rules, respects authority, and participates in group time activities.

II. Her work habits are outstanding. She follows directions, works well independently, puts forth her best effort, completes work in a reasonable time, is attentive, cleans up, and is responsible for personal belongings.

III. For speaking and listening skills, she was outstanding in all but one evaluated criteria, which was speaking clearly. I notice she doesn't enunciate her words well because frequently her brain is working faster than her mouth, so the words come out garbled when she's excited; and secondly, she has an enormous vocabulary, so it makes it difficult for her to grasp the proper pronounciation for all the words. She is outstanding on being able to express herself, enjoys looking at books, listening to stories, answers questions about  story, relates incidents logically, and listens when others are speaking. She is a classic bookworm.

IV. Reading readiness: She received oustandings on all aspects. She understands rhyming words, same/different, opposites, can idetify all colors, names all her letters, and can identify the sounds of all her letters. (Not evaluated: She has started reading a little-- we went to an Irish diner today for brunch, and she read "ham" and "turkey" on the menu, then found "waffles" and ordered that.)

V. Math readiness. She can rote count to "87", recognizes patterns, recognizes all her shapes and their names, recognizes all numerals from 0 to 20.

VI. Oustanding on all art/music/science aspects. They have art, music, science, spanish, and yoga at her pre-K. She does well in all those classes.

VII. Fine motor skills. Uses scissors correctly, uses pencil with control, writes her first name clearly (not evaluated: writes her last name too), can zip and button. She received a "S+" on forming her letters and numerals, so she has room for improvement.

VIII. She's mostly satisfactory on gross motor skills (PE class).. Hahaha, classic nerd! She received Oustanding for participation in class and following direction, but "tragically" (I kid!) was satisfactory in balancing, throwing, catching, and dribbling. Let's just say when she was in Preschool last year and they had a PE Exhibition Show (kids dribbling, doing relay races, etc), Erika insisted on doing the rope climb, balancing, and relay races in shiny black Mary Jane dress shoes. It's just who she is; she'd rather sit and read a book, or make some jewelry, or play dress-up.

IX. Swimming. She's middle-of-the-road with swim. She's not confident about her abilities, but the swim teacher says because she is used to excellig at school, her median performance makes her feel like she's behind, which is really not the case. She doggie paddles with floats, jumps into the pool, can float on her back, but needs assistace with doggie paddling without floats, freestyle with rotary breathing (really? Some kids can do this at 4 years old?).

Final closing remarks on her report card: Erika arrives at school each day with a smile, ready to learn. She has a pleasant disposition that has made her a friend to many children in our classroom. She tackles new challenges with a positive attitude, and posesses a strong grasp o the concepts that are covered in class. She is capable of working independetly, and is a wonderful role model for her classmates.
