another tough month of mishaps and disasters...

Not like December tough, where your kid ends up in the Emergency Room and your mother dies, but pretty tough.

On Tuesday, someone had left brush (really a giant log of a tree!) on the side of the road, and beause of oncoming traffic in the other lane, I couldn't avoid it. I braked the best I could at 45 mph, but I still ended up clipping it on the passenger side, and my side-view mirror was completely damaged, and the insurance adjustors say it's $1000 in damages. I wont get my car back until Monday.

On Wednesday, I manage to go to work without a coat. Normally not a problem for someone who works 8 hours indoors, but I do not. We do not have any hallways at my school. It was 20 degrees (-6 Celcius) outside. It happened because I had so many things to carry to the car: my purse, my breastpump, my grading papers bag, Amelia's bag, another bag of stuff to mail, a blanket for Amelia for the car ride... so instead of putting my coat on like a normal person and going in and out several times, I warm up the car and do several trips to the car without my coat, because I nurse Amelia before I leave, so it didn't make sense to put on a coat, only to take it off to nurse her. (So I normally put my coat on the passenger seat and wear it when I get to school). Luckily, because we work outdoors a lot, all my coworkers have a change of clothes, extra pair of shoes (rain, puddles, etc) and extra sweatshirts/jackets in their car. Thankfully.

Thursday, woke up to find out the motor on our furnace has died. No heat in the house with sub-zero temperatures. We were all out of the house for most of the day, and Erika had ballet after school until 5 PM, then we came home and had soup for dinner, then went to Lowes Home Improvement store to look at bathroom tiles for two hours until 9 PM. (And yes, it was a good way to stay warm...) Amelia and I slept in the king-size bed in the master bedroom with a portable space heater by our side, and that managed to keep the room temperature to 55 degrees (12.5 Celcius), which actually was comfortable enough for us, under the down blanket. Erika, Kade (the dog), and Brian, slept in the living room on the sofas, by the fireplace. I think they had similar temperatures.

Today (Friday), it sounds like there is something wrong with our other car. There is a whirling noise from the engine when you turn the heat/fan on. And the "check oil" light came on too.

weather, rant
