...i know it's serious

I re-read 'Girlfriend In a Coma' by Douglas Coupland this past weekend and was honestly even more impressed this time than the first time I read it about two years ago. It's the sort of book that makes you realize that you can't just sit around and be miserable all the time, that I can't expect anyone to sort out my life for me or just wait to get ( Read more... )

That certainly isn't a bad thing though, I need that kind of motivation sometimes honestly. That having been said, I think I'm taking reasonable steps to get myself sorted out lately, I have my trip to the UK planned for this winter, on top of that, I think I am going to go visit a good friend this winter as well, I've been exercising and keeping myself in good shape, starting to play music again, and well, those are all good things really.

So, what are you going to do with all the books that are being evicted from your house?

Indeed. I think that's why Kundera's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" is one of my favorite books... because it makes me *feel* things and want to *do* stuff (hmm how vague).

La la loooove "Girlfriend in a Coma" though; I might actually re-read it myself soon. Also love the little added treats in the text for Smiths fans... tee hee. Need to pick up the latest Coupland, too.

Mmmmmmmmm... books.

I know exactly what you mean...books like these make you realize just how ridiculous it is to waste your life on being a miserable bastard, and doing nothing about it. I think 'Girlfriend in a Coma' also served to put a bit of fear into me about wasting my life and not doing the things I want to...which hey, can be very motivating indeed.

I still need to pick up Coupland's latest as well...I'm certainly interested to see how it is...I have loved all of his other books though, so I can only assume that I will feel the same towards this one.

I really need to go book shopping soon.

do you think that she'll put through? helterskelter_ November 4 2003, 17:18:15 UTC
Coupland is madly talented. i've read Micoserfs, Generation X, and Hey Nostradamus! but not yet Girlfriend In a Coma. after reading what you wrote, it's first on my Coupland-list. i don't think i have a favorite of his three novels i've read. pick up a copy of Hey Nostradamus! asap. i still have mixed feelings about it.

I definitely recommend 'girlfriend in a coma' I think you would end up enjoying it quite a bit. I certainly want to pick up a copy of Hey Nostradamus! soon and give it a read. Perhaps I'll even do that on my lunch break today...hmmmm.

I definitely recommend giving it a read when you have the chance...it's really good, and well, if you feel like you need a bit of a change of perspective, I think you would get a lot out of it. The thing I like about it is that while the book isn't some sort of sparkly, happy-go-lucky sort of story by any stretch of the imagination, it still is a challange to excessive cynicism, and manages to make you feel inspired to do the things that will make you happy.
