star gators

the fiance's been trying to get me into Stargate SG1 lately. mixed feelings. here are the results so far:

overall concept: pretty good.  an ancient race of god-like beings populated the universe with worm-hole portals, enslaved humans, and used them to mine resources from various planets.

acting: weak.  many of these people grind on my nerves.  are they just saying their lines?  are they wood puppets?  do they know they have characters to play?  they don't act like any military people i've ever known.

characters: painfully one-dimensional.  PAINFULLY.  when they try to add dimension to a character, it's so transparent I wince.  "aww, the boring blonde military lady can have maternal instincts, too!"

makeup: terrible. the alien slave guy just looks like a sad transvestite.  the soldier woman just trekked through an alien planet's wilderness for a week, with no supplies, no bathroom, no nothing, and yet her lipstick and eyeshadow and blush and mascara are as impeccable as they were back on earth.  what?

special effects: decent.  the worm-hole portal somehow never gets old.  the staff blaster rifles are kinda lame though.  who could aim something like that?

music: excellent.  sounds like John Williams or something.  really quite appropriate.

So basically, all the elements for a good sci fi show are there, they just need to totally re-cast the show and replace the make-up artists and the acting coaches, and maybe the dialogue writers.
