Writerverse: Bingo Table of Doom! (Fill in the Blank)

I'm probably rewriting The Church and Its Orbs. I still need to figure out the overarching plot and stuff for the world. I've been experimenting in possible canon, but I don't know how much of that will be in the next version. Anyway, here's another little experimental blurb thing. Enjoy!

“So, who do you have a crush on?” Lila says, bouncing in her seat. Her long honey brown hair bounces right along with her.

I turn to look at Wren, wondering if Lila is addressing my other friend. As far as I can tell, I’ve never had a crush on a boy. But I must have at some point, right? After all, I’m fifteen years old -- that’s plenty of time to have met a boy I liked. Wren raises a perfect eyebrow, her dark brown eyes curious as they look at me.

“I’m wondering, too,” Wren says. “You’ve never mentioned anybody. Why, is it someone embarrassing? We all have stupid crushes.” She shrugs. “I mean, liking what’s-his-face from the coffee shop? Ugh, yuck, don’t remind me.” Wren shudders and sticks her tongue out, as if trying to purge the memory.

They really want to know, don’t they? I scrunch my face up, trying to remember any boys I crushed on. My mind returns nothing but a huge blank -- I can’t think of a single boy who I’ve so much as thought was cute.

Lila leans forward. “It’s not a hard question, Gemma,” she mutters, shaking her head.

“Give me a minute -- I’m thinking,” I say. The air tenses around me, which is odd because Lila’s right -- this isn’t a hard question. Still, my mind refuses to fill in the blank. Maybe I can make something up? I bite my lip, trying to come up with someone suitable.

Wren raises her eyebrow again and crosses her arms over her chest. “Hello? You still with us?”

My face flushes. “I’m -- I’m here.”

“So who’s your crush, then?” Lila asks, her eyes twinkling. “It’s not fair to keep it quiet when we’ve told you all about our crushes. You do have one -- right?”

Lila loves to talk about Oliver, saying he’s the “cutest thing ever” I don’t see it -- he just looks like any other guy to me. While Wren might not care if I don’t have a boy crush, Lila will think it’s weird.

“There’s...this guy,” I say, stalling for time.

“And?” Wren’s eyebrow remains raised.

“I...didn’t catch his name.”

“Oh, really?” Lila says, smirking.

“I saw him...while...waiting on the line for...frozen yogurt,” I mutter. “Yes, um, frozen yogurt guy. I like him.” My face burns with my lie, but I hope my friends buy it.

“What’s he look like?” Wren asks. She’s finally lowered her eyebrow.

Of course they want to know what “frozen yogurt guy” looks like. I scrunch up my face again, though my mind stays as blank as it did when I tried to think of a boy crush who actually exists. An idea comes to me -- I can just describe what my ideal guy looks like, right? It’s too bad I’m not sure what my ideal guy even is. This is way too hard.

“Um…” I decide to force my brain to just say whatever the first thing that comes to mind is. That will work, right?

“He’s...tall. Even taller than I am, maybe six feet?” I fold my hands in my lap and look down at them. “He’s got...black hair, kind of long for a guy. Like, chin-length? Dark brown eyes? Kind of dark skin? And he was skinny, too. He dressed in a lot of black.”

Lila smirks again. “So, he looks like Wren. But a guy,” she says.

“I...guess?” I mutter, my face burning. I did not intend to describe Wren’s male alter ego. “Not really? I mean, Wren has pink streaks in her hair, and Frozen Yogurt Guy...didn’t.”

I can’t help looking up at Wren, who does look like the imaginary guy I described.

“That’s just one difference,” Wren murmurs. Something flickers across her face, but I can’t place it.

Maybe making up a guy wasn’t such a good idea. Now I feel just plain silly for showing such a lack of creativity in creating my fake crush.
