Art, the play Kc was directing and ended up acting in was this past weekend. It was a really good show, we had read it together a while ago. I really like the style of comedy that Yasmina Reza uses, very clever but still ridiculous. I liked Art because it was a cast of three male friends but the way they related to, and expressed their feelings and frustration with each other felt very feminine. I was a plant at auditions and told Kc I would be willing to be a very last resort if he couldn’t find another male actor because I think it’s better with three males.
I went to opening night and then again on Saturday. Charles also made it down for Saturday’s show, he showed up late though which is disappointing but not really out of character for him. His and Kc’s friendship is a bit toxic, fraught with ego and hurt, but neither will talk about it or admit to feeling anything at all. Boys. *eyeroll*
Chanel was bossy and annoying throughout it all. She was, of course, the assistant director for the show. So she absolutely had to control everything and take ownership of it so she had reason to complain/brag about how tired and overworked she was. I’d have the price of both tickets back if I got a dollar for every time she talked about how much monster, coffee, or wine she was drinking to get through this. I don’t get the appeal.
Kc was dissatisfied with turnout, but it was a solid show and he did well as a director and one of the actors in it. He didn’t originally cast himself, there was another guy who auditioned and was cast but he just couldn’t get his lines memorized and the decision was made to have him step out of the role. He’s older and does more to help backstage than act and the brain fog of long Covid doesn’t help either.
The lack of turnout was due to the poor way Janet, who works for wct, promotes shows. It’s frustrating to see and I worry about the murder mystery I’m in not getting it’s due as well. There’s no real simple solution because Janet stands in the way of every idea and will only do the bare minimum for advertising. I’m guessing this resistance is because there is not a lot of money to use for it. If that is the case then it would be reasonable to think that what we are doing is not working and perhaps there should be some restructuring of the number and type of shows wct does, which she is also resistant to. There is no transparency in how WCT is run or how things are decided on, and I think that benefits Janet and her position with WCT. I don’t see there being much improvement in how things go until Janet is gone, either by her own accord or maybe the board will finally do something of worth and fire her. I am not hopeful about it though.
