It was supposed to be a simple excursion to kill a few creatures, possibly gain a little experience and let off some steam. Nothing fancy, nothing earth-shattering, just a casual bit of combat.

But since when was anything Kain tried to do in this mad place 'simple'?

The warp was jarring; warning number one.

The tiny area he found himself in -- a scrap of escarpment, a stony gate that seemed to be lacking some undefinable detail -- was warning number two.

Warily, Kain drew his blade as he began to scout his surroundings.

Behind him, another individual stumbled in through the Chaos Gate. Th flash of bright red should have been more than enough to give away who it was that made it to this Lost Ground. There was a soft curse - Richter hadn't been expecting such a change in scenery - before he straightened. There was another mutter under his breath when he noticed who else was sharing the area with him.

"..."

Richter's just so chatty around people he likes.

Kain doesn't even bother to hide the evil little smile before he offers Richter the tiniest of bows.

"We meet again."

"So we do. I haven't heard from you in a while..."

The red head brushed some hair out of his face before taking another look at their surroundings. This wasn't a field that he had been to before and it looked nothing like the incomplete fields that he, Kain and Albel had falling into that one time. Either this was an elaborate quest or-

"This place is too clean to be another 'system error'. What do you think?"

"I could say the same of you. We did little, at that, the last time that we met."

But there was something more important at the moment than prodding at prior encounters -- alas that Kain had no more idea of what was going on than Richter did. All he knew what that he did not at all like it.

"I think that you worded it very well -- it is too clean here. Too empty."

"Whether a 'system error' or no, I could not say, but something is not right here."

Richter stared at their surroundings a while longer. After being here a few months, one would think that adjusting to all these random curve balls that were thrown at them would be easier. Then again, considering how haphazard some of the official events where...

"Are these suppose to be ruins?" Richter muttered quietly as he took a couple of steps out and into escarpment. The aura of this place was more akin to the Temples that dotted the land of Aselia than anything he remembered of The World.

"Then again, when has anything ever been right?" the half-elf turned around to face his fellow Blade Brandier. "Those kids look like they haven't even learned how to look after themselves yet."

"Is it a ruined structure, or one which was never completed to begin with? Or both, I suppose, given the apparent nature of this place in general."

Watching Richter, Kain stood his own ground and stayed in place. There was something about the emptiness -- and especially the lack of that annoying ambient music -- that set him on edge, and he preferred to be cautious.

His fellow's question caught him by surprise, prompting a snort and a flicker of a wry smile.

"Apparent age, or even actual age, is irrelevant in my experience. But you are correct; they have no sense of proper responsibility, to my eyes."

"Of course, that observation is of little use to us at the moment ..."

Trailing off, Kain glanced back the way they had arrived. They had warped into this area, but could they leave again?

He scoffed quietly at Kain's suggestion. In a place like The World, it wouldn't be all that surprising. Were they anywhere else - back in Aselia, back in Tethe'alla, maybe even Niflheim if Richter wanted to push it - there was no way he would ever call ruins like these clean. There was always something hidden, something in the air and pieces of broken stone, ceramic or whatever else on the floor. There was always noise.

If the two had been here the last time an unopened area appeared beyond the Chaos Gate, they would have been prompted to leave the area faster.

But the half-elf is distracted by the faint detail he could make out on the gate ahead of them. He couldn't move forward though, couldn't get his legs to move because of some strange pressure in front of him. In the distance, Richter just barely caught sight of a silhouette of a strange figure.

"... We should leave."

Brows twitching, Kain crossed his arms and waited out the display of scoffing and amusement; then he promptly settled into an almost lazy posture, cocking his head to regard the half-elf with half-lidded eyes. The slight shift in attention had been interesting.

"Why is that?"

"There's something over there," Richter gestured towards the silhouette. If the two listened carefully, there was a new sound in their environment; heavy footfalls that were quiet still. Whatever was making them wasn't particularly close but was steadily approaching.

Were this any other field, Richter would not have minded half as much about sticking around and fighting it off. But that was when the Chaos Gate was nowhere in sight and this one?

This one was right behind them and was Kain trying to show off? That expression on the blond's face certainly didn't help Richter's mood any.

Had Kain known what Richter was thinking of him, he would have laughed -- mission accomplished, as it were, having been in little mood for his fellow's abrasiveness yet again. Let the annoyance settle on other shoulders for a time.

That being said, the former dragon knight was alert and listening now, cocking his head as if to pinpoint the sound. After a moment of listening, he turned back to Richter and shrugged.

"If you wish to leave, we shall leave."
