So here we are, back for another 9 or 10 months of fun! Today was my second day of school with the new batch of kiddies, and wow, what a crew! There is an accelerated math program in my district called Project Challenge. Each grade at my school has a project challenge homeroom. Last year, the fifth grade had a little bit of overflow, so maybe five or six kids were in another homeroom but went to the Project Challenge class for math. This year, in addition to the 23 kids in the 6th grade Project Challenge homeroom, there are 11 (soon to be 12?) extra kids eligible for the program...and at least 10 of them are in my homeroom, with the possible addition of an 11th!
Another interesting fact: last year, I had 6 kids in my classroom who were on IEPs (getting SPED services). My co-teacher had three, and there were probably three more in the grade, for a total of maybe 12 kids getting Special Education services. This year, there are 5...in the whole grade.
Whatever they have been doing down there in the elementary school, they need to keep it up because it seems to be working miracles. Now I just hope we can keep it up!
P.S. The kids who go to Project Challenge math were late coming back to class today, so I had to take the class to music without them. When I came back, they were all just standing in line, waiting for me! If you don't understand how amazing that is, ask another teacher.
