A lot of people who play WoW have no idea of its story at all. Usually whenever a new patch comes out that adds more game content, a few of us gather around in the guild for some backstory on the significance of the addition. (Or I just tell dqbunny why things are the way they are as we're out and about questing.)
You'd almost be better off doing an RP outside of the game (so it doesn't distract people), either online or perhaps in a gaming group. I did try an RP server once, but I knew a couple people to RP with. Most everyone else on the server just ran around not role playing at all. (A guildmate once said that people spent most of the time on an RP server asking, "What's an RP server?!") Kids these days... :P
I know how you feel about the tech-savvy rednecks. There are a lot of people like that here in Idaho. They could be out on the farm all day, but inside they have the newest technology, and everyone and their dog has a cell phone or even PDA. Bit of a culture shock for me. ^_- They're usually nicer folk than the city variety, so I hope the job continues to go well.
One of the servers, Moon Guard, has quite a reputation for its RP. The population is small and so far those that reside on that server have done a good job at keeping it strictly RP, and basically chasing out those that refuse to. I'll have to find someone I know somehow to try it out with me. Not sure if a beginner such as myself is ready to dive into a "hardcore rp" server just yet. I know what you mean about the storyline, though. After the announcement of the new expansion, I gushed to a few guildies about potentially getting to see Arthas. Most of them didn't have a clue who he was, lol. It certainly surprised me!
...how could people not know Arthas?! He's the reason Azeroth is so messed up! That's really shocking to me... I mean, they even have Uther's Tomb in Western Plaguelands, and the undead city is Arthas' old kingdom. Ugh, people...
lol, exactly. Now you know my frustration with the game. But who cares who the bad guy is, why he's there, or even why you're fighting him as long as he drops that epic gear, right? lol. Meh, ah well. The benefit of the game is that you can play it in all sorts of different angles, so I shouldn't really complain...
