Summary: She told her that she loved her when the snow was falling, but like the snow it melted away.

white snow was falling

A shiver ran up her spine when she sensed some kind of tense energy directed towards her. She raised her eyes from the game she was playing on the iPad in her lap and saw the glare directed at her from someone by the hallway. She blinked a few times before she was about to call out to the girl, who seemed to see red, but she was interrupted when someone grabbed the iPad from her lap. Her attention turned to whoever took the iPad and she noticed that it was Sunny. A small smile crept upon her lips when she saw the younger girl play the game she paused. The nagging feeling of someone watching her welled inside of her again so she looked up and saw that the girl by the door had tightly pressed her lips together. She looked angry.

“Taeyeon-ah.” She turned her head towards the sound of her name, “I don't understand this game.” A soft chuckle escaped her lips when she saw the focused expression on the girl's face while she tried to figure out the game. She moved closer to Sunny on the couch and leaned her chin against the younger girl's shoulder to see the screen.

“Soonkyu, you play more games than the rest of us do,” she joked, only to be slapped on the forearm as she reached over the screen to pause the game. A pout formed across her face as she was hit, but it disappeared when Sunny kissed her on the cheek. She playfully grinned at the other girl before explaining to her the details of the game.

Out from the corner of her eye, she could see the girl by the hallway cross the living room ever so slowly and she knew that her gaze was fixed on them. She could feel the jealousy emanating from the girl and it made her smirk. As she showed Sunny the quick tutorial of the game, she watched the girl raise her head to see who was with them.

“Fany-ah!”

“Soonkyu-yah.”

She lifted her head from Sunny’s shoulder and softly smiled at Tiffany. The forced smile on the taller girl’s face was undeniably transparent and she knew that beneath that smile Tiffany was probably seething inside. She patted Sunny on the back before she stood up and smiled at the younger girl.

“I’m going to go and read for a while. You can keep playing the game, Sunny,” Taeyeon nodded. She saw the excited grin on Sunny’s face and walked out of the living room. As soon as she left the living room, she heard Tiffany scolding Sunny for having been close to her. She wanted to turn back around and scold Tiffany for being jealous, but she knew it was not her place to do so. Before she entered the room she shared with Sunny, she heard her roommate stand up to Tiffany.

“Why do you care, Tiffany? You haven’t seen me yelling at you for being close with the other members do you? Do you really want to do this again, is this really worth it?”

“Is this really worth it?”

She could see the tears in Sunny’s eyes and she knew that she had her answer. She wanted to yell at the other girl, wanted to cry, and wanted to break everything around her, but she stayed calmed. Her emotions were running high, but she knew that the last thing she could possibly do was lash out at Sunny.

“You’re still in love with her, aren’t you?” she watched as the younger girl avoided all possible eye-contact with her, which only fuelled her irritation, but she refused to let it take over her. Sunny nodded and if she had blinked she knew that she would have missed it. She bit her lower lip and looked out the window of their room.

“T-Taeyeon, are you mad at me?”

She was furious for having her heart broken, but she understood where Sunny was coming from. Her feet pulled her to the closed window, but she slowly opened it and allowed the gentle spring breeze enter inside. She brushed her right hand along the sill and collected the last bit of snow in her hand.

“Taeyeon?”

“Remember when you first told me you loved me when we were playing in the snow?” she turned around and showed Sunny the snow in her hand. A sad smile fell on her lips when she remembered that afternoon where she and Sunny finally had time between themselves. She had been pushed into the snow at a nearby park and it led to a snow fight, but it ended when she pinned Sunny down to the ground. She remembered how Sunny looked so happy with all her laughing, but she especially remembered how the other girl genuinely smiled at her. When she heard Sunny say she loved her soon after, she felt as if her world was complete.

“I’m sorry for doing this to you, Taeyeon.”

“Soonkyu, did you ever love me?” her voice cracked as she asked. She could feel the burn of the oncoming tears, but she took deep breaths in order to keep them at bay.

“I did. You will always be my best friend, Taeyeon.”

“I was the snow and she was the sun, right? Our love was strong, but it wasn’t strong enough. Like winter it lasted for so long, but like the snow it would have melted in the end. To you, she was the sun in your world. Your love for each other lasted even if she didn’t realize it. She may have disappeared during the winter, but she never really left. If she hurts you again…”

“You’ll be there for me.”

“I may not be around all the time, but I’ll be here whenever you need me.”

“You should stop being jealous, Tiffany,” she offhandedly said when she saw Tiffany alone in the kitchen later that night. She walked over to refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of water.

“What do you mean?”

A faint sigh left her lips as she walked over to the younger girl and smiled. “I may be really close to Sunny, but I will never have her heart the way that you do.” She saw the confusion on Tiffany’s face and poked the girl’s head. “She was never my girlfriend to begin with.” With that she turned around and left with tears sliding down her face.

“If you’re going to tell to stop cheating with you, you can save it because I’m not,” Sunny deeply sighed when she saw Tiffany standing in the doorway of her room. She stood up ready to push the other girl out of the room until she felt soft lips crashing down against her. Her entire body froze at the sudden action, but she immediately pulled away and shoved Tiffany away. Her heart was racing, her entire body grew hot, but most of all she felt whole again. “What was that?” she cried out, pointing at the other girl. The last thing she wanted was to be confused.

“I’m sorry for how I’ve acted.” Tiffany’s voice was quiet in her ears.

“Good for you, but what was that?” she gritted her teeth when she could feel each pronounced beat of her heart in her chest. She hated feeling so lost especially when it came with Tiffany. The other girl kept giving her so much mixed signals that it started to hurt. She fell in love with Tiffany, but it seemed like she did not care. “We can’t keep doing this, Stephanie.”

“I know.”

“What do you want from me? I’m tired of fighting with you.”

“I know.”

“I just want to be happy, with anyone, but you’re always there making me feel bad for doing so!”

“I know.”

“Why can’t you just be honest with me about how you feel? I hate how we keep arguing about everything!” she walked over to Tiffany and pushed her hard enough to stumble back against the wall. She clenched her hands into tight fists and started to pound them against the taller girl’s shoulders. Her frustration poured out with each hit, but it took only a few hits before they became mere slaps of the hand. Soon, her hands eventually rested on Tiffany’s shoulders and she began to quietly sob.

“Because I’m scared that maybe you’d change your mind about me and leave…”

She looked up as Tiffany’s arms wrapped around her waist. Through her blurry eyes she could see the fear in the taller girl’s eyes. “Stop giving me a reason to make me leave, then.” She stood onto her toes and tentatively pressed her lips against Tiffany’s.

“Can we start over?” she heard Tiffany whisper against her lips. She pulled away and ran her thumb along Tiffany’s lower lip.

“Will you be honest with me?” This was the last time she wanted to be hurt.

“As long as you’ll be the sunshine for the rest of my life.”

“You were always the sun in mine,” she whispered before she leaned back in and kissed Tiffany once more.

She leaned back against the wall adjacent on the outside of their shared room’s door. She heard what was said inside and it hurt to have heard it all. A couple tears fell to the floor, but she wiped them away and sadly smiled. She was glad that Sunny was happy again and to her that was all that mattered.

"Like the snow, I fell."
