This was something I came up with while randomly talking with someone else sometime ago, but I remembered it recently and think it's actually an idea worth considering.

Basically, I think we should reorganize our MRT system. The idea I came up with doesn't involve building any new stations or connecting lines, and can (probably) be done just with our existing MRT infrastructure. Firstly, the loop formed by the NS and EW lines (joined together at Jurong East and City Hall/Raffles Place) should be treated as a single line (tentatively named the [insert synonym for 'circle'] Line, or better, the Circle Line II (because roman numerals are cooler)).

(On a side note, has anyone else noticed that 'Circle Line' is a rather stupid oxymoron? Why do we have to insist on calling them 'lines' anyway? Ever since the Expo and Airport stations were build the EW line hasn't been so much a 'line' as a 'fork'-like system instead.)

Anyways, trains will then run in a loop, clockwise and anticlockwise, around the Circle Line II. All other present and future railways will then either overlap or branch off from the two existing circles. (Of course, we can always build a third circle line if necessary). The route from City Hall to Pasir Ris/Changi Airport can be renamed the East Line/Fork/whatever. The route from Raffles Place to Marina Bay can be called the Marina Extension, or the Casino Line. The route from Jurong East to Boon Lay Joo Koon can be called the Far West Line, or The End of the World Line.

All jokes aside, though, this new system has two main advantages: firstly, it simplifies the MRT system conceptually. I find it easier to think of it as a system of circles and branches and bridges rather than as a tangled mass of crisscrossing lines. Secondly, it cuts down on the number of people who have to change lines at Jurong East and Raffles Place/City Hall. (I know that the future lines are meant to alleviate peak traffic, but it doesn't hurt to have an additional measure).
