The Tech Bit:
Is shared web hosting a dead industry? I can't find anyone who can do it adequately without either being technically crap, or administratively crap. My preference nowadays is to go back to my original plan - put all LAMP based websites on my own machine, rather than a shared host where I don't have root access.
The Non Tech Bit:
So one of my shared hosting suppliers just sent me an email saying that I hadn't paid a bill. It said I could respond in a number of ways - one of which was replying to the email. So I did that. I then received a bounce message saying that they had stopped responding to mail in this way and I had to go to their website for support. Argh - that would have been fine, but why offer me something you no longer supply!
Anyway the problem was related to something I blogged about some time ago. They had put the wrong VAT rate on their invoice and had attempted to correct it. What they did was to give me a credit note for the amount, and then issue a new invoice with the new VAT rate. This would be fine if the amount due was the same as before but they managed to round up. The new invoice was a penny more than the old invoice.
Argh! idiots. So the first I heard about this was today when I received an email saying that they would disconnect me if I didn't pay an invoice which they had not previously told me about. How much do I owe them? one penny - due to their mistake. They better put a one penny credit note on their account or I am going round to their offices to cause a scene. I've considered posting them a one penny coin (first class of course!), and also wonder what it costs them if I pay by credit card.
Anyway, I'll name them once I don't need their services any more... :-(
