Next time you're in Home Depot, see if they have thin plastic netting that you can drape over the strawberry plants. It'll still allow sunlight and moisture through, but the birds won't be able to get to the fruit. A natural way to deter the squirrels is to plant a border of marigolds around the plants - they hate those for some reason. :)

If you're not already on a local Freecycle list, you might consider joining one. In spring, many people post plants that they've divided, or extra gardening supplies. I just got enough hostas to plant in the beds in both my front and back yards from a freecycler last week! It would have easily cost me $100 or more to buy the same number of plants at a garden center.

Well, I dunno; I don't grow anything you can't eat. How would Marigold Soup taste?

I think marigolds are edible; the petals could be used in salads. Same with nasturtiums and violets.

Good luck on your garden. N is expanding hers this year. BTW, where is this Pakistani/Liberian market?

In Northeast Philly, close to me. Actually, it's Pakistani, but has such a large Liberian clientele that I think of it as a fusion.

The weird thing about it is that the sign on it actually reads,
"LOW COST GROCERY STORE
A Subsidiary of [whatever the name is], LLC."

Kinda odd.
But they sell ten-packs of onion naan bread for $3 or $3.50--one "loaf" is low-fat and 14 grams of protein ... so they're cheaper than protein bars.

(Oh, no ... naan bread. More things I can't eat because of Passover.)

How about getting a nice tall pole and hanging grow-bags off it? The squirrels etc. won't be able to reach the strawberries hanging down.

I keep them out of my flowers with spray-on Bunny-B-Gone (I can't remember the real name... but it's equally cute), a mix of onion oil, garlic oil, paprika, and predator urine. Works like a charm, but stinks to high heaven, so you wouldn't want to spray it on anything you actually planned to eat. :-)
