Gwiboon snorts as the teacher gives out the groups for the project. Herself, Kibum, and the one senior in their class, Junghee.
"I'll be putting Junghee with you both, as your English is the best."
She heaves an exaggerated sigh, pulling a chair up next to the older girl while Kibum is busy finding them an English book to base their short story on.
"What was that for?" Junghee snaps, tapping her pencil harshly against the desk. "I'm not that stupid."
Gwiboon laughs, even though she shouldn't. "Wow, jump to conclusions much?" she asks. "I never said you were stupid."
"You implied it," she whines, having gone into full pout mode.
Gwiboon can't deny that, so she shrugs, frowning at how the tips of her nails are chipping. "I never said the lack of your English skills was necessarily bad. Maybe for the project, but I think it's cute," she says, keeping her voice down and very deliberately running her foot up the back of Junghee's leg.
Junghee kicks her. "No, don't pull that. I'm mad at you."
Gwiboon tries not to wince, tries to play it cool as she shrugs again when all she wants to do is throw her pencil at the older girl's face. "Then you don't get your surprise later," she says airily.
"What surprise?" Junghee asks, pouting for a whole different reason.
Gwiboon stays silent, eyes drifting over to see if Kibum will be done soon.
Junghee kicks her again. She gives into temptation and throws her pencil.
"Yah, girls!" the teacher shouts.
