Out of all the poems we have discussed this semester in class “A Supermarket in California” by Allen Ginsberg was without a doubt one of my favorites to analyze as a class. It is definitely a good poem to have a friendly debate over. Though, Dr. Angel-Cannkindly refuted argument that the poem expressed Ginsberg’s own sexuality, I still stand by what I said. Let’s face it; the writing is on the wall! Though he uses Walt Whitman’s name I believe that he is the one who wishes he was "...poking among the meats in the refrigerator and eyeing the grocery boys” (Ginsberg). Even though many will argue that this has nothing to do with him, I did my research and learned that Mr. Ginsberg’s sexuality was also questionable in real life. Hmm…maybe I am over analyzing this but is that not what we have been taught to do? Anyway, regardless Ginsberg’s sexual orientation the poem was still fairly interesting. There was a lot of repetition of the ideas of loneliness and isolation but also the word “we” was used quite often which leads me to believe that Ginsberg felt a very close bond between himself and Whitman. I think he felt connected to him in some way and believed that he understood him and could relate to him. I believe that if Whitman and Ginsberg were both alive today they would be best friends forever. They would be the Patrick and Sponge Bob of the literature world. Yes, for those of you wondering I did just compare two of literature's amazing linguists to cartoon underwater sea creatures with low IQ's.
