More about LJ DOS attacks

Apr 08, 2011 16:46

From fabulous endlessdeep, this is an interesting article: Why Have Hackers Hit Russia's Most Popular Blogging Service?I am a practical person. Unless I am given some very tangible proof, I am not sure what to think. I think it is as likely that DOS attacks are caused either by LJ's competitors or some group of hackers somewhere who don't have anything better ( Read more... )

I know for sure that both my home and my work address is dynamic, so I don't think that necessarily works. But I think you would have noticed if you are "zombified"

Yes to the first and not necessarily to the latter. I was sure I was clean for different reasons: 1)my ip is dynamic, too 2)I'm pretty OCD about the security on my computer and 3)my ISP was working on my DSL line so there was no way anyone could have used it since it was kaput for days. ^^

That said, someone a bit less tech savvy than us could use the info. No? ;)

I was zombified myself in the middle of night so I forgot to say THANK YOU!

Also, even if IP is dynamic , it will be within a certain set of numbers in a certain place. So if your/my town is not marked this would be a definite proof.

I am going to re-post this.

Also I noticed LJ finally introduced captcha for anonymous comments - this must be the reason why spamming calmed down in the last 2 weeks or so.

Don't even mention it.

Forgot to say that my town wasn't marked.

Um, well, captcha for anon commenting has been an option for ages. Maybe LJ automatically switched it on for all the journals. Mine was already set this way so.

I didn't notice it before (but I usually login first so I just might have never had a chance), but the login changed about a week-two ago and this is when I noticed captcha.

Ha, but I had another spam comment today which is a pain!

I always log in through LJaddon, which points me to https://www.livejournal.com/login.bml I don't know if it's the same page you log into.

I guess you get spam comments because your journal is unlocked. I only got one spam comment in my whole LJ life and that was due to a bot.

Yes, I also made it available to search engines at some point. I don't get too much spam, bu t I guess no-one likes it?

*shudders* I made it as private as I could. I minimize my journal's inclusion and my comments in search egines. Journal promotion, pingbacks, finding my LJ through my email? They're all turned off. I didn't even list any interests cos way back then that was the only way for random people to find journals.

I guess I want as many people as possible (if interested) to find my ramblings. I "found" LJ like this myself, just by googling Battlestar Galactica.

I see. Back then I used to be on fanforum and talk about tvshows and art, and then I met mickfish, we became friends and she told me about this place. I guess the way I discovered LJ influenced the way I lived it.

Yes! Our first experiences often shape everything else, don't they?

I become really REALLY obsessed with BSG after the first season ended, and I was just googling because I wanted to know every single little deatil (like transcripts) and BAM! I found fanfiction. Imagine: I didn't know what fanfiction was 6 years ago. :D I come across an LJ that I found really interesting, and this person was one of my first LJ friends (and still is one of my friends).

I think I found fanforum and http://www.gossamer.org/ pretty much at the same time so I discovered fanart/fanfics and forums where fans talk about their shows at the same time and it was like discovering a new world. I loved it! I also loved it here, but getting used to LJ was hard at first. I mean, at first I only had friends here. I didn't even know about comms? ^^'

HA! I wanted transcript of the eps of The X-files myself. *high-fives*

You see, this is partly why I am stuck to LJ - I think moving anywhere from somewhere where you have good friends will be hard.

Oh, yes, X-files were even before BSG . This is how I found out that you can find transcripts on the Internet, again, by pure fluke. And some other info - I remember a site that had detailed description of every Mulder/Scully shippy interaction in every episode. It was great!

omg why do I always babble so much? Sorry! blueocean80 April 10 2011, 23:32:02 UTC
I don't see the problem. Or rather, if you're talking about LJ/DW, I don't because it's honestly the easiest thing in the universe to follow one or the other or both. The tracking feature on both platforms is wonderful. You can track a journal and your friend's posts are delivered to your email account instantly (then again, my thunderbird is always open and maybe not everybody does the same). If you want to comment to your friend's journal, you log in with your open id and you're done, no need to register an account where you don't want one. Personally? Since I'm still so much on LJ because of the comms, I track posts via LJaddon rather than LJ's tracking feature, but that's just personal preference ( ... )

I am so-so about the tracking feature. I have seen a bit of an uproar when it was introduced ("creepy people will be tracking meeeeeeeee" posts) , so I assumed it is a bit of a faux pas to use it. :D

I am more of a "this in my space and I am in it": I open both Google mail and LJ as soon as I am near any of my computers (which is most of the time).

If you're talking about LJ and, well, basically any other platform, I kinda see your point. I said 'kinda' because if I'm really ( ... )
