From fabulous
endlessdeep, this is an interesting article:
Why Have Hackers Hit Russia's Most Popular Blogging Service?I am a practical person. Unless I am given some very tangible proof, I am not sure what to think. I think it is as likely that DOS attacks are caused either by LJ's competitors or some group of hackers somewhere who don't have anything better

I am so-so about the tracking feature. I have seen a bit of an uproar when it was introduced ("creepy people will be tracking meeeeeeeee" posts) , so I assumed it is a bit of a faux pas to use it. :D
Personally? Since I'm still so much on LJ because of the comms, I track posts via LJaddon rather than LJ's tracking feature, but that's just personal preference.
I am more of a "this in my space and I am in it": I open both Google mail and LJ as soon as I am near any of my computers (which is most of the time).
If you're talking about LJ and, well, basically any other platform, I kinda see your point. I said 'kinda' because if I'm really interested in what my friends say, I'll find a way to keep in touch with them. I use livebookmarks for non-LJ/DW blogs for example.
You see, I don't think my way is better or anything else, it is just we get to use things the way we used to them. For me is not only about specific friends of comms, but about the fact that everything is in one place. I open it, I am in it. As I mentioned before, I wouldn't mind to be able to copy LJ posts somewhere else, but for me there is a difference between copying from LJ to somewhere else and copying FROM somewhere else to LJ (might make no difference to anyone else, but does to me).
Plus, I don't see many alternatives Journal-wise apart from DW and as you know, I am so-so about DW. I don't think there are good enough guarantees of DW to exist in few years time. I remember one of my good friends moving to Great Journal (and so did few others - I did some cross posting for a while as well). But Great Journal stopped to exist completely and abruptly. I hear you on "DW is run by fans" argument but I don't think the fact that it is run by fans makes is a very reliable platform. Fandom is probably the most volatile environment I have seen.
The only exception I make is for Facebook because I have a visceral dislike for that site and its disregard of users' privacy. I do have an account there -registered in a moment of insanity and just because I caved in to peer pressure- so I occasionally check what's going on there, but I noticed that FBers have the tendency to share everything all the time. Which, fine if they like it, but it just makes me feel weird about myself and, well, them.
Hee! I am absolutely the same about FaceBook. It is so high-school-kids. Plus security is so bad.

I think it's creepy to track a journal of someone you don't know and never had interactions with, BUT -and I'm now I'm using myself as an example- if, say, we've been LJ friends for a long time, we're mutual friends here and you or someone on my flist wanted to track my DW journal, I wouldn't feel weird about it. I mean, I already granted access to every single person who's on my LJ flist so they can, if they want, comment with their LJ OpenId. Being friends here or there doesn't make a difference. I mean, we're friends regardless of the platform we're using to communicate.
As with all things in life, common sense is what turns any action in a faux pas or not, imho. If an LJer posts unlocked entries or comments to public entries, it means he/she indirectly grants access to that content to everybody so tracking it shouldn't be much of a problem to them (it isn't to me). Locked content can only be tracked if the "tracker" and the "trackee" (yes, I'm making up words now. HA!) are friends so, again, the content is already accessible to them; the form in which it is accessible it's different, but that's the only difference I can think of.

Man, we're so different and yet so similar. I consider Firefox my space. I'm all for customization and getting whatever content I want in a hassle free way. I keep track of LJ through LJaddon, of twitter through another addon, random blogs through my livebookmarks, same with my RSS feeds, my itunes is linked to it through Foxytunes and so on. You see I'm forgetful and kinda lazy so it's nice to have everything in one place and however much I like LJ, it just isn't wide enough for all my interests. For example, I don't think that LJ's RSS tracking feature to be all that great. I've tried it, but it just doesn't cut it and installing a standalone RSS reader is a hassle. FF just saves me time.
Also? The way I surf LJ drastically changed when I installed the LJ addon and dude, it drastically improved my experience of it. If I hadn't discovered it, I might not have been such an active LJer. My LJing is more -how shall I put this?- focused? I almost never read my flist through LJ's default flist precisely because I get instant notifs from my LJaddon. I can decide if I want to read any entry by reading its title and the person who wrote it. If I want to check a particular journal or comm, I access it through the addon. I use friends filters a lot and since I joined a bazillion comms and it gets confusing to read aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall of the entries, I simply check specific comms whenever I feel like it (say, I'm in the mood for pics of a specific actor? I go to the comm dedicated to him). I swear LJing is so much easier and faster with that addon. I can post, check my tags and inbox, search my journal, edit my profile with just one click. Also? I use "insets" a lot. Indents are bits of HTML code that normally you'd have to type out, but with insents you just paste them with a click of the mouse. I'm aware there are addons that do the same thing for every other website (think "Clippings") but this one is LJ-specific and it works very well.

Oh, I very rarely use one Browser. For one thing, Firefox used to be THE BEST but it is not anymore, Chrome is the flavour of the year. :D During the recent DOS attacks, Chrome performed much MUCH better for me than Firefox did. Seriously, some hours I couldn't access LJ through Firefox at all and I could through Chrome. But this is besides the point - I use a variety of computers (like my daughter's laptop where she only has Chrome) and I am also used to skip between browsers for testing I do at work, so I am usually simultaneously working in 3 different browsers. I have a set of favourites (blogs, etc) which I periodically re-import between the browsers, or I just simply re-find them in Google if I am on any irregular computer.
But?? What do you do if you are abroad or something? Like I was in Russia and their didn't have no Firefox no Chrome?

You sound very advanced. If I want to check a specific journal, I go back to Userinfo page and clicl on it. :( I have favourite comms in favourites. I am also old-school coder and I don't mind writing html ALL TEH TIME, it is cort of like writing English (may be even better because I knew how to write HTML before I could write English well ). :(

I disagree. I do like Chrome and it's fast, but it's not nearly as fast or customizable as FF is and, as I said, I'm all for that. I don't doubt that sooner or later, Chrome will have millions of extensions but until that day comes I'll stick with FF. I'm prepared for everything, yo! ^^

That is very weird. I do have Chrome (I have aaaaall the browsers, even Opera, which is nice, and IE, which is bleeeerrggh on so many levels) but when the DDOS attack came I couldn't access any LJ page through it. FF took forever and a day, but I got through many times. I swear I tried to access LJ in any way I could and only FF managed to get access to it. TBH I didn't even realize LJ was under attack until someone told me. LJ was slow for me, but not completely out of reach, and I brushed that up as yet another glitch that seem to afflict lj every now and then. I wasn't much bothered by it.
When I'm abroad and I don't have my laptop you mean? If I'm stuck with internet cafés, I still use LJ and my emails are lifesavers. I get notifs for everything. If I can use a computer of someone I trust or if the internet café I go to doesn't lock programs, I plug in my USB and use my portable Firefox, which has all my favorite addons.

Ow, man! I remember those days. *shudders* Try the addon I usee (for FF, for Chrome) and see if you like it. Wait, wait, you can check the programmer's page; he's Russian and explains what the features are. Mind you, some of those screencaps are kinda outdated, but you can get the gist of the addon.
I don't mind writing HTML code. The thing is, sometimes I do mini-picpsams in comments and it gets annoying to type it all out. I'm a Right-click and Copy&paste girl. ^^

Hee! On the funny note, I just can't read any software-manuals in Russian. i just don't know what are the words for everything! Even when I worked in Russia our boss had all PCs installed with English versions of software.

Chrome has fixed some things that the old Firefox was still fixing or occasionally crashed the browser, true. But despite FF being more...what's the term? a hog? I'm still sticking to it. Dude, I use Chrome every day, but in terms of functionality and customization nothing beats FF, even now. I'm probably missing something vital here, but what other features does Chrome have beside Firebug? I do use Chrome, but I keep going back to FF cos the sheer number of features I can use and add is mind-blowing.
I know what most users whine about (FF being a one-process browser) is exactly one of the reasons I'm sticking to it. On my machine, if I run 20 tabs, which is not unheard of, FF doesn't eat up as many resources as any other multi-process browsers do. 20 process of chrome, one for each opened tab, would KILL my pc esp if some of those tabs are loading vids. With FF? Nope, it still runs smoothly. Sure, if a tab crash, then the whole browser crashes, but I find that that doesn't happen as often as you'd think. And when it does crash, FF recovers all the tabs so *shrugs* It's highly possible my pc is a temperamental creature; it does, after all, take after me ^^
*g* Well, at least you can speak it. Look at the bright side. BTW, I tend to install every program in English as well, even if the Italian version is available. I got used to doing that when I was a kid and back then, most online manuals were in English. It was easier to troubleshoot my problems if my version matched the online version. ^^

OMPH! I didn't know (or missed it) that you are from Italy. I LOVED Italy (even though we only nbeen in Frorence)

LOL I have talked about Italian movies and music in the past and a lot about my town lately...ahhh, you might have missed that since rl posts? On DW only now. Sorry.

Unless it is IE of any ilk hence it doesn't work with a lot of HTML stuff and you ahave to test everything in it. I hate IE.
** DOUGHHHHHHH! **

I've always had multiple versions of IE for testing purposes way back when I used to create websites. Now I only stick to one and just because most Asian websites, esp Korean, are specifically created for IE and they just don't work with any other browser. Korean pages are heavy as they are since SK has one of the fastest internet in the world and web-developers and designers go heavy on the graphics and vids, so loading a page from Italy is already hard as it is, with non-IE you simply go crazy.

BTW, the Chrome/Firefox debate: I have asked Si. He says Chrome is MUCH faster (this must be a debatable issue) , and also that javascript engine is much nicer (which I suppose makes sense for us as we do a bit of javascript).

I swear I refused to buy from a few Korean websites because there was no protection whatsoever. I know, I know, protection on the Net is an illusion, but a few online stores don't even use encryption when you checkout. WTH! They might as well email all the data of their customers to all the people who have bad intentions. Grr
Thanks for asking! much appreciated

I do use paypal, mostly for donations, and when I buy it through it, it's only because it's faster than typing the card's number and I'm lazy. ^^
I'm actually more meh about Paypal because that one is linked to my bank account. /o\
