I went into a mini book craze and caught up on some of my to read list.
I can sort of recommend of
Quatrefoil. My only reservations have to do with all the rationalization that goes on about the nature of human sexuality and the ending. I feel that not all the dialog on the topic was necessary, and the ending plain sucked (though it might have been necessary). It is surprisingly engrossing despite the fact that I hardly felt sympathetic to any of the characters; it's more intellectually engaging than emotionally engaging I'd say.
On to Manga!
Gintama is my current drug of choice, and it's a particular standout because the anime is so good, unlike the average Jump anime that tends toward mediocrity. This is owing to the AWESOME seiyuus that were cast and the studio not being afraid to do some less than orthodox things, one example being the tower of babel (which is an euphemism for another oblong *cough* object). It should be more popular but I think the type of comedy in Gintama can put some people off. It's full of crazy and random stunts that barely make sense in any context, and breaks the fourth wall pretty regularly. Still it manages to be serious enough to make me take it seriously. My favorite gag so far was the four-way no-toilet-paper fight during the Kyuube arc, it must be seen to be believed; pretty hard to fit in toilet humor, tactical scheming, character building, combat and some romance into one bathroom break.
The manga gives me no end of grief though because Sorachi should have been a novelist. I swear he's wordier than Nakamura Yoshiki (Skip Beat).
