Charlie shifted in his seat, unable to stand still. He bit his nails, the small pain a nice distraction from the thoughts swirling in his head
He had always believed in God.
It had been part of his education, his parents giving him milk and faith since the day he was born, and he had never questioned it.
He knew he wasn’t a perfect Catholic, of course - but then, no one is. He didn’t care enough not to sin, when he had the chance, and he felt only somewhat guilty after. Besides, he had never done anything really wrong. Girls, drugs… it’s only human, after all. And that’s what priests are for. The washing machine for souls.
He snickered, a few heads turning questioningly in his direction. He started tapping his fingers on his thighs, a syncopate rhythm. just to keep his hands occupied.
But he had never hated God, no. He had always tried being respectful of him, at least in church. He knew he should’ve respected him everywhere, but in church... it just wouldn’t do to insult someone in his own house.
He shook his head, a bitter smile on his lips. The tapping not enough, he started humming softly, and again was reduced to silence. Chords pulsed to life in his head then, dissonant notes incapable to form a melody.
Today, though, is different. Today he cursed at God with anger, his heart torn by the betrayal, hoping everything would just turn to ashes, just like his future. He rose from his seat and walked away.
At the altar, Liam and Karen stood, unaware.
