I HAVE A SORE THROAT. AGAIN. WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FREAKING HELL, I JUST *GOT* BETTER! drinking copious amounts of juice and warm drinks to soothe the damn thing
okay, first things first. i finished reading catching fire yesterday, which is the second book in suzanne collins' hunger games trilogy. you can read my thoughts on the first book
here.
this installment was as fast-paced as the debut novel, was exciting at times, had some twists i didn't expect [and some that i did], and i am even MORE entranced by the dystopian world presented in the stories - which is why i will definitely read the third and last book when it comes out.
however, i wish the writing was better. i remember a discussion i had with
blamebrampton last year about how certain YA works would be much improved if only the editing was better, and i think catching fire is a prime example of that. the protagonist, katniss everdeen, often comes off as a mary sue [she's capable, she's beautiful without knowing so, everyone loves her or is captivated by her, etc etc]. she definitely has a lot of qualities that are NOT admirable, [which make her more interesting than a one-dimensional mary sue] and i like her overall, but i feel that collins doesn't do a good enough job of delving into her character. she also doesn't provide as much detail on the world of panem as i would like, but i expect that's because she's waiting to make all the revelations in mockingjay. [looking over my review of hunger games, i see my complaints have not changed!]
would i recommend this book to others? yup. if you enjoyed part one, you're probably curious about what happens next, and there are certain developments in this book that should keep you hooked.
wizard hat rating:
has anyone else on my flist read this book yet? if so, please share your thoughts with me!
on a completely unrelated note, i bought a bouquet of crazy daisies on sunday because i want to dry/press them. i love the colours. i know they're dyed, but i still think they're gorgeous.
AHAH THIS IS NO FLOWER. TRICKED YOU!
here is a small selection of fic and fanart recs for your enjoyment. i think i'm going to do a vocab post next because i haven't done one of those in a long time
FIC RECS
1)
the way you work your tongue, can i hire you? by
chez_amanda : wincest. this all started after i saw
this particular icon on
chez_amanda's journal. i started making comments about how dean would TOTALLY go nuts while watching sam enjoy fruity cocktails with umbrellas and other paraphernelia, which led to researching x-rated cocktail names, and discussions of exactly how sam would make dean's pulse race. THEN SHE WROTE THIS FIC AND MADE MY BRAIN MELT. SO GO READ IT AND TELL HER HOW HOT IT IS.
2)
i would love to have the sex with you by
chash : wincest. ahaha omg this is hilarious. i love how blind dean is to all of sam's attempts at romance
5x22 codas:
plenty have been written already.
sawedoff_recs has already done 2 editions based on 5x22 codas, so if you're hankerin' for more, check out
post #1 and
1)
umiyama koete [crossing oceans and mountains] by
chash : gen. this is simple and understated and lovely.
2)
you are my mountain, you are my sea by
arlad : gen. a lot of lovely imagery that perfectly captures the bitter emptiness in dean's life, with an ending that feels plausible.
3)
a purpose to this life by
dugindeep : gen. this is sad and beautiful, and illustrates how dean keeps going regardless of what happens.
4)
open road by
mollyamory : wincest. this was written before the finale so it glosses over the conclusion to the ep, but it makes for a wonderful read. i love how there's an equal amount of give and take between the brothers, and how uplifting the narrative is.
5)
promises to keep by
sulwen : wincest. i liked how dean was in character, and how the author dealt with the dean/lisa angle.
6)
nutshell by
ctheb : wincest. dean's grief is so very palpable in this story. i'm not particularly fond of how he deals with lisa, but there are some great lines in the fic, and ultimately, it comes down to dean defining his entire life by sam.

MISCI see this wicked fun party going down, and I'm glad there are people having fun and screwing with music and fashion and the boundaries of how people accept (white) women's sexuality, but I also know that if I showed up to that party they'd probably let me hang out, but very few people would actually be interested in me or in people who look like me.
1)
a commentary on the glam-fetish-bisexual parties of lady gaga & christina aguilera: this post by
amazonziti is a very interesting read that discusses the disconnect between the messages conveyed by current pop/dance videos and reality.
