As we already know, yesterday was a sad, sad day for the Canadian hockey team. Also, it is very odd when people in the same household cheer for the opposing teams.
On Saturday, I made a soup that I now call 'essence of the Buddha' soup. Get enlightened instantly just by smelling it, guaranteed.
The recipe is here. It's pretty good if you can get the ingredients. I made it with non-vegan dashi stock, because I was adding naruto (a fish paste... foodstuff). I don't think it was a big hit with my husband, though, since he doesn't really like daikon or konnyaku. I get the konnyaku hatred -- that stuff is not for texture-picky people (actually, I can name quite a few Japanese foods that are not for people who dislike slimy jellied things). Anyway, it made my entire house smell like burdock root and dashi. I also made inarizushi to complete the day of Japanese cooking.
Watched more Olympics. I am usually pretty conflicted during Olympics -- I can never figure out which country I am supposed to be rooting for. I think this year I'm just rooting for people. If you competed well and won, then yay! grats on your medal regardless of where you are from. If you lost for a reason and then grumbled about it like you were entitled, then I don't care if you are from one of my countries, don't be such a sore loser.
A few weeks ago Felicia Day made
a post about holes in her sci-fi education. Which reminded me that I have a bunch of holes in there myself. So I am now reading Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep (yes, I had never read Vinge until I read his A Deepness In the Sky last year -- I came to sci-fi late, don't shoot me).
