day 05 → your favourite quote
I read through my list of
Charioteer quotes while pondering this and it hit me all over again how much I love that book.
If you're looking at this through my journal page, there's a box on the right between my calendar and tags called "Epitaphion." This is the Greek root (Επιτάφιον) of the English word "epitaph," so named because I could imagine the quote inside as a summary of my life and view of myself that could be written upon my death.
"On a stricken field littered with the abandoned trophies of his lifetime, he remembered a victory which had once seemed beyond the furthest reach of the most secret aspiration." (From Mary Renault's The Charioteer.)
I often feel like things I accomplish are important momentarily, then left behind as markers of sorts for different stages of my life as I wander onward into something else, searching for something I can only grasp at the very edges of my conscious.
The full quote is: "There would be frost soon on the pane. Laurie pressed his forehead to the icy glass and shut his eyes. He didn't know why memories which had lain with his mind's lumber for so many years, waking no more than a dim nostalgia, should return now to charge the present with so unbearable a weight of longing. On a stricken field littered with the abandoned trophies of his lifetime, he remembered a victory which had once seemed beyond the furthest reach of the most secret aspiration. But he only said to himself that he must have someone to talk to." In the context of the novel, the victory Laurie is thinking of is loving and being loved by someone.

Huh. I've never viewed myself as immature, but atypical? . . . maybe.
Valentine's Day (which is also the third day of the Winter Olympics and also also Chinese New Year -- Happy Year of the Tiger!) we're having my dad's birthday dinner. (His actual birthday was yesterday, but we always have our homemade family dinners on Sunday.) My dad requested burritos, but my mom didn't want to make something she can't eat (she's not suppose to have spicy foods or tomatoes), so I'm cooking them while my mom makes the soup and cake.
