Time for my first update on my fitness related mission101 list. As you know, instead of filtering these posts, I'm going to lj-cut them.

Fitness/Exercise mission101 Updates

Friday, June 11, 2010:

Category 5 - Lifting (Bench Press): (Example) (Note: I begin with a neutral grip/hammer grip and end with a normal grip)

40. 140 lbs. 3 x 8

Category 8 - Lifting (Goblet Squat): (Example)

67. 70 lbs. 3 x 8

Exhausted by a long week, I decide that I am not up for a full weight-lifting routine. Since I am going to decrease volume and intensity, I decide it is the perfect opportunity to up my weight. I decide to try Swiss Ball Bench Presses and Goblet Squats with 70-lbs. dumbell(s). Not being an idiot, I ask one of the guys at the gym to be a spotter for my final set of the bench presses, and manage 3 x 8 of both without deterioration in form.

Category 4 - Running

33. 14:00 mile.
34. 12:30 mile.

On May 4, 2010 - just about two months ago - I tried running a mile for the first time since high school. I was not a success. I came in at 14:11 - hence my goals.

Today would normally be a yoga day, but due to a pretty terrible sunburn on my back, I couldn't really do anything involving lying down.

Ouch. So I decided to take a shot at running again. I (still) could not run the entire mile. The track is 1/28th of a mile, so I ran the first 6, walked 1, ran 6, walked 1 and then alternated running 2 and walking 1. In the end, I didn't feel as terrible as I had after my 14:11 mile. Better, I clocked in at 12:05, shocking the living hell out of myself.

Category 6 - Lifting (Deadlift): (Example)

49. 70 lb. dumbells (140 lbs.) 3 x 8

Still having problems with the sunburn, I couldn't do anything involving a bench/lying on my back. Perfect excuse to go for another goal. So I decided to try to deadlift and then bent-over-row 70 lb. dumbbells. To keep my heartrate up, I decided to superset each with 70 lb. Goblet Squats. I ended with some cable rows (or twists).

The deadlifting went fine. Meaning I completed it. It probably wasn't entirely a good idea. Roman deadlifts risk injury unless the form is perfect, so I should probably be more careful about going up slowly. That said, I managed 3 x 8.

The rows were another matter. I managed 7 1/2, 5, 5 and wasn't even close.

However, I did manage to do 6 x 8 Goblet Squats. Yay.

Conclusion: A nice start, but I also picked off the low-hanging fruit.
