2. I feel your pain, but unfortunately my car is new enough that I'm still taking it to the dealer. I love the mechanics there (which was not the case with the dealership where I moved from), but it's a Saturn, so that's no help for you.
4. Nearly all my furniture is from Ikea (I'm new here too) but I've gotten some great stuff at Target also-particularly smaller stuff like chairs, side tables, bathroom cabinets, etc. (actually we have two bathroom cabinets from Target serving as nightstands). Have you tried Unpainted Furniture (maybe it's Unfinished Furniture?) on Menaul? They seem to have some decent stuff, and if you don't mind adding on $20-30 for the cost of stain and varnish and some sweat equity, it's not a bad way to go.
5. Since Elena Gallegos is mostly closed, and so are most of the trails at the top of the tram (the Crest trail is open, but that's a three-hour hike ... and the altitude still gets to us when we get much higher than Albuquerque, and that trail is about twice as high as the city), we mostly hike out at the Petroglyphs, but be warned, it's really, really hot out in full sun (no shade) on black rocks! The Bosque is also great. Hopefully with all the rain we've been getting the last couple weeks, they'll start opening up the other trails soon.
6. I'll drink the tap water with no problem if there's ice, but we also have a Brita filter pitcher that we keep in the fridge, I think it was $30 and it's about $15 for a box of four filters (a filter lasts three months). The only problem is that we drink so much water that we fill up the pitcher (which is a half gallon, I think) three or four times a day. But I think you can also get a filter that attaches to your faucet for maybe $30-50 (plus the actual filter replacements), which is a big outlay, but it will last for a long time.
Yeah, we're waiting on delivery of a CD rack from there that more-or-less matches one we already have from Ikea. And cost about the same, so that's good. The bad news is it had to be special ordered from Denmark. So we ordered it in April and it should be in sometime this month. Here's hoping. Meanwhile, our CDs sit in boxes (our current CD rack is filled with DVDs; we underestimated how many of each we had).
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the thing with IKEA is that all the stores are close to ports, on the theory that water-shipping keeps costs low. Their location map seems to bear this out:
Looks to me like it's just the really big population centres, rather than necessarily ports. I mean, Phoenix? Given the business model, I wonder whether NM as a whole has the population to support an Ikea, then again I'm from Scotland, and Glasgow had one with a population of less than Albuquerque, so maybe it's not completely out of the question.
Possibly... but then I would think that Denver/Boulder would be able to support one. I Googled to try to find out what the deal was but got no satisfactory answer. :-/
I think you may very well be right about them choosing to be near ports. And, of course, with the cost of gasoline, no one wants to truck furniture here.
But, we have a railroad that runs right through the center of town -- it's almost like being a port city. ;)

Sometimes I find IKEA-like furniture at TEMA, and that will have to do.

It kind of sucks. I have a couple of TEMA pieces, but I really had to save my pennies for them.
