“I feel naked. Do I look naked to you?”
Mal looked Wash up and down. “A person with threads on don’t usually feel naked. Any particular reason you‘re asking?” They were seated opposite each other at the table, Wash resting his chin on his hand.
He shrugged a shoulder “Oh you know, I just feel lighter, not so restricted by any manly, manly…” He struggled for a word before abruptly pulling his hand away from his mouth.
Mal sat back, eyes widening. “Would you look at that, smooth as a babies behind.”
Wash looked at him hopefully. “You think so? It was like losing a piece of me, something I had tended to as lovingly as a gardener.”
Mal nodded. “It was a work of art.”
“Yeah…”
“You gonna grow it back?”
“Not if he ever wants to make an honest woman of me Sir.” Zoe walked passed them with a backwards glance as she took a piece of fruit from the bowl. “Isn’t that right honey?”
“Of course muffin! I wasn’t even thinking of it, nuh-ah.” He smiled at her widely while his fingers automatically brushed his bare top lip. “I knew it bothered you. You could only withstand the stubble burn for so long.”
Zoe smiled at him coyly as Mal looked at her with consideration. “You’re face looks fine, always has.”
She took Wash’s hand and pulled him up as she replied to Mal. “Who said anything about my face Sir?”
They left him nonplussed before he choked on his drink, looking after them with amazement. It was a full minute before he shouted after them, face shocked and puzzled.
“What do you mean an ‘honest woman’? Zoe? Wash?…Guys?”
