Went to mom's bank this afternoon with the intention of closing out her account, thinking all I'd need would be a death certificate and her account information.
Turns out, I'm going to need to see an attorney and get "succession paperwork" to go with the death certificate before I can close out the account.
EDIT: Just remembered I forgot to mention at the bank earlier today that mom, a few years back, had put me on her account as a secondary user, in case something happened to her. Since I was just "inquiring", I didn't mention any names. I may need to call the bank Monday and ask again.
I've sent messages out on a couple of local attorney websites about my situation, for succession papers if I need them.
After the bank sent back mom's retirement and Social Security deposits earlier this month, I got a letter from them, so they know mom is deceased. It was probably then that they canceled her debit card, which I found out a couple hours ago, after a recorded voicemail from the home phone service saying the monthly fee billing was declined. Went to the website and changed billing to my debit card. The "premium feature" version of the home phone (a yearly fee) is already renewed until April 2024, the small monthly fee is covering state taxes and 911 service.
I'll probably drop the home phone after the yearly premium is over, and only use the mobile phone, which I JUST renewed for another year a few days ago. I don't use a phone enough to have TWO phone services. Mainly only had the internet based home phone service for mom, since she wasn't much into "technology".
