Some things from my journal about 30 years ago:
July 29, 1986
Fed ducks with F at Wellesley Town Hall. News includes William Rehnquist being nominated for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (replacing the retiring Warren Burger), Boy George pleads guilty to possession of heroin, another bombing in Beirut, Red Sox are in first place ahead of the Yankees by 4 games.
July 30, 1986
I write about my work history including salary history....
First job was as a bagger at a supermarket (Roche Brothers) making minimum wage of about $3.35/hr. Then, night shift there during the summer (1983) before college mopping floors.
Summers during my college years were at Hewlett-Packard Medical Products Division in Waltham, where my father worked. PC Fab Department during the first summer (1984) then the next summer (1985) in the bedside recorders department. There, I electrically tested and troubleshot equipment for $8.39/hr.
Summer of '86, there were no openings for technicians, so I was an assembler of monitor front panels... Mounting the cathode ray tube (CRT) on the front panel, assembling PC boards to the panel, putting stickers on, puting magnets on the yoke to adjust the display position, etc.
I then wrote about the day... I drove myself into work that day because my father was away in California on business... F came over to watch a bit of TV before going to work at Sack Cinema where she sells popcorn 3 days a week. She also works everyday at Newton Buying.
"The News is boring today"... Reagan and Thatcher may propose sanctions against South Africa, Boy George was fined $375 for heroin, Senate hearings to confirm Rehnquist. Red Sox have Roger Clemens pitching tonight. He has a 17-2 win-loss record.
