For my Song Hall of Fame, "Freudig begrüßen wir die edle Halle" from Tannhäuser, by Richard Wagner
Oooh. Cultured ! This is the march and chorus from Act 2, Scene 4 of the German Opera Tannhäuser. Translates to something about a joyful welcome in the noble hall. It was written in the 1840's.
I've known this little tune from an early age because it was on an L.P. of classical music snippets that I used to listen to when I was a kid. You know, a bit of Nutcracker, a bit of Sabre Dance, a bit of Beethoven, a bit of whatever. I knew this song as "Tannhauser March" from the album, and it was one of my favourites. Very majestic and powerful... I used to plunk it out on the organ, figuring out how to play it by ear. Then later on, it'd be part of Music class in, like, seventh or eighth grade, and still later I think we played it in the school band (where I played trumpet, not very well).
Richard Wagner also has a strange appeal to the fascist in me, so I tend to like him better than some of the others...
