Chuck Berry RIP
Chuck Berry died, so that's the current thing.... He was 90.
Here's what I wrote about him a long time ago...
As John Lennon said, "If you were going to give rock & roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'."
Chuck Berry is the Alpha. Without him, there would not have been a Rock and Roll. No Beatles, no Rolling Stones, no Beach Boys, No Sex Pistols... you name it. He started it all off with his genre-defining guitar intros and he invented life as we now know it with his intelligent lyrics about what it means to be young and rebellious.
Chuck Berry's no angel, but neither is Rock and Roll. Sometimes he's magnificent and sometimes he's downright ornery, as he was the two times, respectively, I've been to see him in concert. That second time, in fact, he was absent altogether due to that orneriness. Luckily for him, tho, his few years of creative excellence in the 50's and early 60's outweigh the bad parts of his time here on earth....
