"Gamer-Sympathetic girls like Final Fantasy games and Kingdom Hearts, but they're not Gamers. The simplest distinction is that Gamers are HARDCORE. "

So what, playing a 40+ hour game and unlocking everything and getting all the secrets and the gold chocobo and all the ultimate weapons MEANS NOTHING TO YOU? HUH?

RPG genre is just as gamer as anything else. I like 'em because they've got stories to them.

Besides, if I'm not a hardcore gamer then please tell me why I've got one lvl 60 and a hojillion alts on WoW, man (actually most of the alts are low level except for the two lvl 30's but give me a break I haven't been on in awhile.)

Nah, you're hardcore, Aeire, and I didn't mean to discount RPGs as a Gamer genre. I mean, I <3 Bioware and Square-Enix. And I'm afraid to think of how many hours I've sunk into various MMOs. ;P

What I meant by that passage is that some Gamer-Sympathetic girls will play through a game like Kingdom Hearts and then put it down when they're done and not touch another game for weeks, if not months.

I altered the wording a tiny bit to be less confusing.

Gamer-Sympathetic girls like Final Fantasy games and Kingdom Hearts, but they're not Gamers.

is now

Gamer-Sympathetic girls might enjoy Final Fantasy games and Kingdom Hearts, but they're not necessarily Gamers.

This isn't being an apologist, either. ;P I definitely didn't intend to disparage RPG gaming, and I can easily understand how you read it that way (hence, the change).

You do realize I was half-joking and not really pissed, right? Hahahaha - I just hate it when people go 'Oh RPG's aren't REAL games' - don't get me wrong, I like the fighting games and whatnot, but my rapid button-pushing skills are hazy at best, since I grew up playing Mario and the like.

you need a better camera. i couldnt tell that you had blue hair... only because you said so did i notice the slight blue tinge. but regardless of that, bully bully on the hair. now you just need some elf ears and a frockcoat and every geek girl in the universe will drool on you. ... that doesnt sound very hot, does it? ohwell!

I was actually trying to open up my Goth and Punk Girl demographic appeal! Usually, being Asian is enough for Geek Girls. ;P

I think I'll try red in a couple of months.

You know, I'm not really hardcore myself. Am I only a gamer-sympathizer, albeit a male one? Probably according to your definition. I think of gamer-sympathizers, of which I know several, as people who don't really play games much at all, but are fine if you do, and know that you can still be into them even while also being into games.

By my own definition, I'd be a lot happier with a true gamer as a girlfriend, because I would want to do everything I do with all my regular friends, with that theoretical girl. By yours, though, I'd be totally happy with that final category. *shrugs* I certainly know what you're talking about, mostly just a difference of terms.

I had the same thought as I was reading the article. Growing up with a gamer (my little brother) made me think I was one until I met all you fine folks on the IntarWeb. I'm nowhere near hardcore enough to properly BE a gamer, but I have my things. (Old school arcade!)

Like most things, it's not so cut-and-dried. You can easily make a case for a sliding scale (like sexuality) for Gamer potential. A simple 1 to 10 scale would be something like this:

1-3: Non-Gamer
4-7: Gamer-Sympathetic
8-10: Gamer

I think the one semi-relationship that i've had so i can throw 50 cents into this conversation, could be described as gamer sympathic but with a large non gamer leaning.

"I played FF7 for a while but quit once my brother deleted my save games. I should try Kingdom Hearts."

5 mins later.

"Are you going to play that game or are we going to do something?!"

geesh :/
