30 Weeks of Fanfic -- Week 4

Week 4: Do you have a "muse" character, who speaks to you more than others, or who tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

I don't have a 'muse' character as such, for at least two reasons. Firstly, I don't write many stories in any one fandom. Secondly, I try to maintain some balance between the two characters in the main pairing, even if the story is entirely in one point of view -- I've discovered in the last year or so that I have an equality / competence kink and, on looking back, it has influenced most of my fics even when it isn't apparent at first glance. I think that this balance between the characters prevents one character from taking over completely and consequently stops any one character from becoming a muse.

I have had a character push their way into a story once or twice, but I'll talk about that next week.

I have to be careful with any medical characters (doctors, nurses, healers, etc) because that's my field and it doesn't take much for me to write reams of unnecessary detail. I usually end up cutting at least half of any hospital or doctor's surgery scene (so if you think the scenes are too detailed now, imagine what the first drafts were like!). I went overboard a little bit in part 4 of Feasts, Feuds and Frolics, where I had the healer putting Berry in traction, but I couldn't bear for him to be severely crippled as he would have been without it (before internal fixation, spiral fractures were notorious for healing short).
