Theme: The sound of madness

Time. There had never been enough time. Specifically, there was never ever enough time for him to learn what he needed- to gain the strength he needed. There was never enough time for him to gather the power, the knowledge, the skills he needed. It was something that proved itself to him over and over again as if time itself liked to sit back and taunt him. It had its own special sound to it- that laughter.

It was the sound of his parents screaming as the ravens ripped them apart. It was the sound of his own when he first died. It was the sound of Mytho’s shrieks of horror when the darker sides of his heart were returned to him.

Time’s laughter was the sound of pain. This pain usually came from the absence of more time. It was maddening.

This time, he swore. This time there would be enough of it. He swore to Ahiru that he would be by her side forever.

He had worked tirelessly. He had to learn- he told himself. He had to learn to control this curse that ran through his blood. And for once, he would beat time and restore her to a form in which he could honor that promise.

It hadn’t occurred to him- and it seemed so painfully obvious in retrospect- that while he had the rest of his life, she only had the rest of hers.

She was, after all, just a duck.

What burial is a person supposed to give someone who meant so much to you? The last person to really understand you? The first person to embrace everything you are? The only person that ever would?

What kind of apology could you give to them for not having enough time to save them?

He understood it was more than he could give. All he could offer was a place by the cabin where they spent their time together. He hoped it was enough. Or maybe, he thought, it was his way of trying to keep a small part of what time had stolen from him yet again. Smoothing the last bit of loose earth over her resting place, he felt a pain so familiar that he knew exactly who to blame. In his despair, Fakir cried out in anguish. He knew the sound well.

The laughter of time was the sound of madness.
