Pepper served in the Navy for 3 years & 6 months, including the Bay of Pigs incident and the assassination of President Robert F. Kennedy.
Pepper's family has a proud history of military service on all sides. Her father's ship went down in the Pacific during WWII without his having seen her. Her step-father served, as well.
During that period, the US military didn't send women into combat zones. Today, US military women serve on the front lines, alongside US military men.
Friday evening through Saturday night, Pepper is attending a Military Women's Conference. I don't know what they'll be doing, and I don't know that Pepper does, either, but I look forward to hearing when she returns.
Getting her off to the conference was interesting. As usual, Pepper had 25 things that she wanted to accomplish, with only time for 5 to 10 of them. Among these, she wanted to hem two new pairs of slacks to wear at the conference. In the end, she decided that she could wear the same pair of slacks for both days of the conference, so long as she wore different blice (silly plural of "blouse") at different times.
I pinned the hems of both legs and sewed one of them while Pepper sewed the other, succeeding in getting them ready in time for her departure. Isn't it nice to have a man around the house! :)
